They would need a repaint crew there 24/7. Even when the victims have video of the vandals OPD will do nothing. They cannot keep up with the rest crimes going on let alone trying and deal with the epidemic of spray vandalism, illegal dumping and the illegal encampments. These property owners have to pay to repaint or be fined by Code Enforcement. We are all paying tax's for enforcement that's not happening.
More than a shame... a disgrace for Atthowe Art Services http://www.atthowe.com/. Its not only the graffiti, but the dumping and lack of care by owners of the building for cleanup, though they load/unload from the loading dock routinely. SMH.
Ditto what David said : I received Graffiti Abatement Notices from City.... Owner(me) responsible to paint over the graffiti..... doesn't matter that the vandals climb over neighbor's broken cyclone fence & graffiti all along our wall. We have to pay $100 to a laborer to paint over it or the City slaps a Lien on our property. Also, I was robbed 1.5 wks ago and filed a Police report: got a letter from OPD a couple days ago : they are dropping the case unless I (get that, ME? ) give them evidence to find the burglars. Seriously: how upside down is this City, or what? !! Basic tax-funded citizen services are not funded or supported in Oakland. Just venting.
I sure would like to see this building owner be a good neighbor. He has taken care of grafitti in the past but has apparently decided to stop trying. Also, this is not rocket science- lighting and strategically placed plants/landscaping would significantly lower the incidence (and remediation cost) of grafitt on this wall. Small investments would pay off very quickly so it seems awfully short sighted to let the grafitti pile up like this. Such lighting/landscaping solutions have been successfully done on other nearby warehouse properties (not to mention tens of thousands of others across the country) so it is hardly a tough nut to crack...
Civis Iratus has a good point - grafitti abatement can become an undue and very expensive 'tax' on local small business which is undoubtedly counter-productive and unfair. But allowing blight to exist and flourish becomes, then, a tax on nearby residents whose quality of life and property value (two admittedly crass but real assets) are negatively impacted instead.
In this case, the community members have gone out of their way over the past two years to provide substantial guidance and resources to Attowe to help reshape this area - at low cost - so these blight issues would decrease in severity and frequency. If Attowe is going to ignore this kind of neighborhood participation, then the very least he could do is pick up the garbage along the side of his building. Meanwhile, he is actually and technically responsible for this grafitti.

The problems at this location have deteriorated and evolved so I'm closing this case as there are literally dozens of new ones at the exact same location. A shame City of Oakland and ATTHOWE ART SERVICES ignores repeated requests from neighbors to address blight, dumping, and sanitation issues at the Atthowe property.
