Transpo Dept., can I get more feedback on this? What is the process? What are the criteria? I crossed there today, at the walk signal. Cars are turning right when the Walk signal is On. And let's face it, they are not "cars" they are giant deadly SUVs. I had an SUV in the cross walk -- IN it -- and the nice lady driving it waved me by when she realized -- oh, a human being is crossing at the cross walk.

I am supposed to appreciate that, with a grill two feet from me at face level.

So, please, I was happy you acknowledged my request, but what are we really talking about here? A possibility of a no-right-turn sign? What is the process? When is a sign going to be installed and is there a possibility (totally unacceptable) that a sign will be deemed unnecessary for that spot?

I think we need both a no right turn on red and a sign that says yield to crosswalk

In fact, you know what? How about a gate, like at the RR crossing. Seriously, please respond soon. I am only kidding about the gate -- barely. We should have gates everywhere, but we never will.

I just would like them to explain what "acknowledged" actually does to move us forward to a solution. I would like to know, at minimum, if they CAN put a sign there. WHEN would be the second question.

A traffic cam does not tell people to wait before they turn right. There is no sign there at all, Wiz Waz. They are not currently forbidden to turn right on red. And they do it when people are in the crosswalk, when the walk signal says walk etc.

Now, I am sure you agree, seeking some more feedback from the people whose jobs it is to attend to these things is reasonable of me.

Obviously, my request was all about getting a sign put up, so you know that. I don't know what the traffic cam comment was except to needle me. I hope you have better things to do -- you may think I should be needled but whatever criticism you have, remember, I am posting a real concern about a real safety issue.

OK, latest cross walk at Water and Brewery report: Today. Walk signal says walk. I am crossing Water from Wooster Square side to Brewery street. Drivers are turning right on red onto Water so I wait half way across Water for them to finish. Two drivers do this with a pretty good line of cars on Water waiting to turn.

Third car is nice guy who waves me through. He no sooner does this than a car behind him starts beeping at him. Angry beep -- go, go, go.

What is he supposed to do, run me over?

So, this is the typical scenario at that intersection. Invariably bunches of people turn right on red even when they see a pedestrian in the cross walk with the walk signal in her favor. Often, one decent driver will wait, and for that there is a good chance the rest of the drivers will get angry.

Can the sign division say some more about the review process?

Everyone at Brewery has to take a right or left, so, its not like there is some better way for me to cross, and there is only one crosswalk. Almost every intersection in New Haven forbids right on red and people know to look for the sign. Most do obey it if it is there.

OK City of New Haven, it's been TWO YEARS NOW. When are you installing a 'no right turn on red' sign???

Do you know how drivers respond to the very few intersections in New Haven that allow right turns on red? Like it is Christmas. They fly in unending stream during rush hour, car after car, while the Cross Walk says WALK.

Again, walk signal says WALK, people are WALKING. meanwhile there is no sign barring right turns, so at SAME TIME, cars are TURNING RIGHT.

The 'no right on red sign' at Chapel and Olive is also ignored by many drivers. This whole street needs attention to improve public safety.

Agreed Anstress but the situation at Water and Brewery is a little different. There is no sign at all at Water and Brewery. Although drivers ignore the sign at other intersections, when there is no sign at all, they are extremely aggressive. Note the scenario described above of being in the crosswalk with the signal in the pedestrian's favor, and stream of drivers turning right. When someone stopped to let me finish crossing, the drivers behind him were furious and started honking at him. That happens any time you try to cross around busy times - rush hour, lunch hour etc. Someone is going to get killed.

Yes, drivers ignore the sign, but they really go overboard when they think the turn is legal.

They need to finish the Water/Brewery intersection. the new walk signal there is now two years old but no right turn sign to date. It's long overdue and about time they acted instead of dumping a fly-by acknowledgement on this post and disappearing.
