Hey Debbi, I think there is a better way of dealing with rarely moving vehicles than claiming Yale students don't pay taxes. City street parking is a common pool resource that we all share with our neighbors. A nice note or chat might do the trick. If that does not work, I would familarize yourself with city parking ordinances, and ask for offending cars to be ticketed. As for the tax issue, most Yale students who live in New Haven are indirectly paying property taxes. Through their rent payments, the actual property owners pay taxes to the city. Without a lot of renters in New Haven, the city's tax base would probably be really hurting. Some students may actually own properties, and, of course, they would actually have to pay taxes directly. Also, all out of state cars should be registered with the New Haven tax office. These out of state cars still have to pay car property tax to New Haven even if a car is registered in some other state. These people are actually paying much for their vehicles because they have to pay registration fees in one state and taxes in another. Since most states do not tax cars like CT, registration fees in other states are usually higher. You just cannot tell by the license plate if the cars parked in New Haven are registered with the New Haven tax office. I would give those Yalies a break on the tax issue, and just ask them to follow city parking ordinances.
