I assume they watch where the driver leaves the packages. Mine were left on a covered back porch in a fenced-in yard. Please keep your eyes open for strangers lingering around the delivery trucks
It's Christmas time, folks. This has been a problem all year,, in that neighborhood, and there has been no effort, that I see, to form a block watch , or to have the neighbors, like you, instruct delivery services to not leave packages unattended. The police do know about the problem, and have a whole city to watch.
I do instruct delivery services to not leave packages unattended, when they aren't small enough to fit in my mailbox. This one was the size of a greeting card. Apparently it was foolish of me to think that my mailbox wasn't being rifled through. But isn't that sort of what this website is good for? I mean, I'm not coming home on my lunch break to patrol the neighborhood, but part of what block watches do is speak to their neighbors and talk about what's going on. Now people know that packages are being stolen.
raddish, yes, the mailboxes too, if they are not locked. I live on the other side of the Green from you. What I can tell you is that the problem you have has existed all summer and fall, so people already knew it's a problem, except for you, I guess. and I am not going to spend the day watching your house for you.
A block watch is that you meet with your immediate neighbors.. Nash St, Mechanic St, Lawrence St. and around there,, and you make a plan,, you take shifts for watching, and for communicating with each other and the police. If you talk to your alderman, the alderman can arrange for a place for the meetings and time. Put your alderman to work.
As I said, it's holiday time and there is an increase in thefts because thieves know that there are gift packages arriving , and being held onto. My own block also is having this problem and we are organizing too.
Seriously? Organizing shifts to watch for package theft? Most of my neighbors, like myself, work during the day! I think this is a perfectly reasonable post to alert neighbors, and I think it's inappropriate for neighbor to "blame the victim" for not organizing some sort of vigilante group. One great use of this site is to note patterns of theft - if indeed there are folks following the truck, then that's organized crime that the police should deal with, not citizens. See something, call the police.
And, these repeated admonitions to not have packages left at one's house are not helpful. We should be able to have packages delivered to our homes safely. Obviously, take precautions to avoid making yourself an obvious target, but some of us have no option but to have packages delivered at home, during the day and if the packages are left out of sight, we should have a reasonable expectation of having them still be there when we get home.
And I should add that i think block watches are a great idea, and I'm glad neighbor is organizing one for this purpose. It just isn't reasonable to expect others to do the same in this context.
rat, I disagree, but, they are not my packages so do what you want. The nature of a block watch is exactly that we 'watch' the block, and it is in shifts.. If you think that is too much for you, then,, you can think whatever and do whatever you like. You are entitled to your opinions and your own idea of how to handle your deliveries. Block Watches do work,, but you don't have to be in one.
