Sorry to hear you have had two break-ins. I live near you and I havent had any issues in the 5+ years i have lived here. I generally dont leave any cash or valuables out (regardless of the value) and I even keep my middle console open to show there is nothing there.

I live on Lawrence Street and happen to be the block watch captain for the two blocks between Orange Street and Whitney Avenue. This is a generally good, safe neighborhood, but it's a city and from time to time we do have issues.

It's important - as Chris L noted - to leave nothing of value in your car or nothing to suggest that there is anything of value to prompt a thief to break in and search. The same goes for your house/apartment if you have first floor doors and windows. Don't leave anything in sight.

I sincerely welcome you to the neighborhood and hope that your experience improves. I can't stress enough what a great place this is and how safe it can be when the necessary precautions are taken.

Which block do you live on? Did you call the police?

I'm between Orange and Livingston... and yes I called the police/filed reports etc. I just moved here from another part of new haven (closer to downtown) and after two years there I had zero issues; now after two weeks on Lawrence I've had two break-ins a week apart. I understand that in New Haven there's a baseline understanding that anything not chained down will be gone in the morning...there's not much I can do about that ... I suppose I'm just looking to see I'm just a statistical anomaly or if Lawrence is somehow targeted because its part of a "nicer part" of town.

Crime around here seems to be cyclical. I haven't heard about any other car break-ins or other time over the last week or two, so maybe your break-in was the start of a new cycle or perhaps it was random. There does tend to be an uptick in incidents when the weather warms and people leave windows and doors open and often cars are inadvertently left unlocked. This sort of thing also tends to happen around the holidays when there's a tendency to leave holiday purchases in cars and packages are being delivered at a higher rate.

a dollar is a reason to break into a car- I hate to suggest this but the trashier and unclean your car looks the less likely they are to break into it. I caught a guy once and asked him what he was trying to steal (didn't even have a radio) and he said "I don't Know" I mean really- It doesn't make sense... hang in there they move on..

There's a good chance that the thief couldn't tell that the bill was a $1 bill. For all he/she knew, it could've been a $100. The problem now is, they know you have left money in your car in the past and they may break in again just to check if you're continuing the habit. Keep your car totally empty. Even non valuables and clutter give the suggestion that something good could be hiding inside. Good luck.
