That would be amazing. I would like to ensure that this driver is at a minimum ticketed, and I think the footage would be a strong basis.

I was not able to view the video at City Hall, and they seemed unprepared for such a request (they assumed that I had a lawyer and that I wanted to pay for the video footage). To clarify, I'm trying to allow the police to view a dangerous incident and take action accordingly. The police department has the video, I am told, but they didn't know where. There is a company outside of New Haven that is in charge of video requested by citizens and I'm awaiting their response. Apparently the camera at that intersection only senses for cars for traffic flow --I'm not sure why the officer I spoke with does not have that information. The company is checking on whether there is any actual camera recording the intersection.

This happened adjacent a busy bus stop and the timing and speed that this driver thought "safe" was beyond reason. I hope that the police will respond and have viewed the video (if any).

The video stream data from the Transportation, Traffic & Parking Department cameras cannot be viewed at 200 Orange St. The data is kept for up to 15 days by a third party and video footage can be requested through the company that houses the data. To clarify, as I feel that the DTTP's answer is a little opaque: you need to call Fred Strumpf at 860 798 4769 and email ipvideo@att.net. They will then give you a very pricey list of choices which are:

I called ipvideo and asked whether there is a camera AT the State and Chapel intersection; they said that they didn't have any idea but that they would let me know, which they have not.

Hopefully TTP is not paying these amounts to view the video, and they actually do review them, but I have no information on that.

If there is some way I can get a copy of the police report that I hope was filed, I would be interested to see it and whether the officer looked at the video, as he said that he was going to.

All in all, not encouraging.

Correction: I did receive an answer that there is a CCTV at that intersection. My shock at the prices made me forget.

If you send a letter or e-mail to the NHPD and say you are requesting the footage under the Freedom of Information Act, they have to show it to you. (Video is a "record" for FOI purposes). They might ask you to pay the cost of making a copy of the tape or make you come into the office to watch it (both of which they are allowed to do).

Oh never mind, I see that someone else has answered the question with better information than my own.

If you write the NHPD and ask for the police report under the FOI, they should send it to you. Thye might redact a few lines though.

I think this is outrageous. Does anyone know of a news outlet in New Haven that might care? Rather than giving a ticket to someone completely ignoring all traffic rules, we try to penalize the person it could have killed, asking them to pay hundreds of dollars to prove that it happened. "Welcome to New Haven?" This is the same corner, directly in front of the new 360 State building, where my car was broken into, also on video, also unseen by the police. Why do we have so many police per person if these are not being investigated? Are there no detectives? Can anyone tell me how many detectives the City employs? Thank you.

Yeah, I'm not sure that this is closed or that citizens having to pay to see footage that the police should be required to check themselves is an answer.

The larger issue is the policy of charging the public $300 - $400 to help catch criminals. This case was fairly extreme in the reckless-driving category and there was no action around it, yes. But maybe there would have been had it not been associated with a $300 charge. Clearly that caters to lawsuits, whereas this was an occasion for a license to be revoked. Who owns the camera itself? The City or the vendor?

So you are aware, the NHPD records division has access to the camera footage which is regularly utilized in their investigations.
