The lights in the city of Dunwoody along ADR are so ill timed that a journey from ADR and Meadow Lane to the 285 diamond at 2:00 am takes 8 minutes. On most nights, you'll be stopped at EVERY signal, usually for nothing. Not only does this waste people's time, it also contributes to lowered gas efficiency as well as idling pollution concentrated in one area that should otherwise be clear of vehicles.

The horrific timing and programming of these signals is well known and well documented yet the city and county refuse to take any action other than posting comments like, "we know it's a problem but we can't afford to fix it."

Also, you can be further delayed in Dunwoody between 10:00 pm and 7:00 am because the turn arrows activate for no reason. So, you have twenty cars idling for no reason.

These are actually two separate issues. The first posted on 4-23-15 was not a signal timing problem but was related to unusually high traffic at Ravinia from a large business conference hosted at the Crowne Plaza that week.

The second issue regarding signal timing during late night hours is related to video detection equipment that sometimes falsely detects the presence of a vehicle on the side streets. The false detection only affects traffic during late night hours since during the day when traffic volumes are high all of the signals are on a coordinated timing plan that has resulted in reduced travel times and vehicle emissions. The city has a project to replace this detection equipment which was installed before incorporation. The cost at over $100,000 is not insignificant and is being planned as part of a larger project for a number of traffic improvements in the Perimeter area.

If the problem is indeed the video detection equipment (which it probably isn't) then Dunwoody could implement a shockingly easy adjustment of the detector heads (it would save you over $99,900.99). The Commonwealth of Virginia has made these adjustment on several THOUSAND detector heads in the Fairfax, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Roanoke and Arlington metro areas. What's Dunwoody's excuse?

The video detection has been adjusted repeatedly by city personnel and the equipment manufacturer. It continues to be unreliable and will be replaced with different technology as stated above.

Seems like the City of Dunwoody got ripped off by the equipment manufacturer, but the real issue is that this equipment doesn't even work. A friend that works at URS as well as a colleague of mine notice that your lights aren't even on a motion sensing cycle at nighttime.

Exit I-285 WB to Exit 29 to ADR NB: Stop at diamond interchange for 15s.

Proceed on ADR NB: Stop at Hammond/Ravinia intersection for 21s.
(As soon as this light turns red, the next one is turning red exactly on the dot)

Proceed on ADR NB: Stop at Ravinia Pky/Mall Entrance for 19s. [Stopped to allow ZERO cars]
(As soon as this light turns red, the next one has just turned red)

Proceed on ADR NB: Stop at Perimeter Center E/Mall Entrance for 55s. [Stopped to allow ZERO cars, two cars left gas station and were stopped just before reaching the light to turn L onto ADR SB]

Proceed on ADR NB: Stop at Perimeter Center E & W for 75s. [This intersection is on the same timing regardless of the time of day, so there is no motion sensing equipment working here, never has been for the past two years. There were ZERO cars attempting to turn from either Perimeter Center E or W, just cars stopped on ADR NB and SB for no reason other than to cause inconvenience and delay due to faulty equipment]

Proceed on ADR NB: Stop at Perimeter Center N/Perimeter Center Trace for 30s. [Stopped to allow ZERO cars through, although three cars leaving Perimeter Center North received the red light as they approached the signal]

TOTAL TIME TO TRAVEL 0.9 MILES: 5-7 minutes

The City of Dunwoody became an independent city in order to better handle and manage its finances and local works. This is not the case here.

As stated above the city has a project to replace the faulty equipment.
