the traffic signal at 25th and K Streets NW continues to be too short for pedestrians. Pedestrians, especially those not able to sprint across or with grocery carts are caught on the median strip with traffic zooming by in both directions. This is all day long, but is especially dangerous during rush hours.

The American Disabilities Act requires municipalities to time pedestrian signal to accommodate a minimum pedestrian crossing speed of 3.5 feet per second. At the named location the requirement has been satisfied and no problems were uncovered. Thank you for your interest in traffic oprations.
this not an ordinary intersection. cars block intersection to gain access to side roads. there is no reason why another 5 seconds can't be added. to be caught on one of the "islands" which are not wide is a frightening e xperience I am 72 years old and find it difficult to get across in the time limit which now exists.

DDOT recently implemented the Downtown Signal Optimization Program to ensure pedestraina and vehicles are in compliance. We thank you for bringing this to our attention and for yor interest in traffic operations.
19 seconds is not enough time. Look at traffic signals on Virginia Avenue and 25th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and 25th Street NW. they are all longer.

DDOT recently completed the downtown signal optimization project to ensure all vehicle and pedestrian signal timing are adequate. The 3.5 ft/sec pedestrian walk time required is satisfied and the pedestrian timing is adequate. Thanks Anthony Dinkins (202)671-4634.
Compare the timing at this crossing with that of Virginia Avenue and 25th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and 25th Street, NW and it is not the same. I write to explain to you as a senior citizen that the timing on this light is inadequate leaving pedestrian in the middle of the roadway when light turns. In addition, vehicle traffic comes speeding out from under tunnel and it is dangerous for pedestrian caught on "island" in the middle of the road.
What does it cost to add 5 or 10 more seconds to ensure safety of senior citizen pedstrians?

DDOT calculates the pedestrian speed for 3.5 ft/sec. as required by the American with Disabilities (ADA) Act. The intersection timing has been verified and the pedestrian and vehicle timing are working according to design in particular the pedestrian has adequate time to cross with respect to each crosswalk. If you have any concerns feel free to contact me at (202) 671-4634.
