The walking situation in East Rock is ridiculous - this probably applies to a multiple of other neighborhoods but I live in East Rock and this is what I'm experiencing.

To those who have cleared/salted/sanded their sidewalks - a HUGE thank you. To those who haven't: I'm completely not blaming you since you have no motivation. The city continues to complain about not having enough money to plow the roads (a whole 'nother issue itself) - Well guess what New Haven - THERE ARE PLENTY OF LANDOWNERS WHO HAVEN'T CLEARED THEIR SIDEWALKS AS PER CITY RULES: FINE THEM! This is the only way to get people to become responsible for their properties - give them incentive to clear their sidewalks. I have fallen THREE times in the last 1.5 weeks, and it wasn't for lack of proper shoes.

The areas surrounding Humphrey street are impassable - I should've just worn ice skates this morning trying to walk down Orange st. Part of the problem of course are the mountain heaps of snow/ice on the sidewalks that are preventing draining of melting snow.

Your citizens are @#$%, New Haven. Where the HECK are our tax dollars going? If you're hurting for money, start being freaking pro-active and enforce your own statutes - with all the fine money you'd get, maybe you could start doing something about the dang budget.

The budget problem is that the City goes all out and overboard on the first snowfall, which uses up most of the annual budget right there. Then they complain that their budget is low so that they can get money from other sources added on,, and they do very well with both sources. There is a lack of proper organization and deployment throughout the season. I have also fallen twice, but who cares? We need to call an ambulance each time we fall, and bill it to the City.

I agree with the writer that the sidewalks are impassable AND that the city seems to have patted itself on the back after the first storm and then ... nada. I kept waiting for the odd side to be cleared of cars and it wasn't.

I have to walk my dog every morning around the block, which is all I can manage and today Orange between Bishop and Humphrey was a disaster. I cannot keep hoping not to fall and break something, which would impede upon my ability to make a living.

New Haven, wake up, please.

It's very difficult to walk with a stroller. They could fine the people who don't shovel and pay for all of the pot holes in the streets to be repaired.

The city has chosen not to enforce the fine. I've been told this by my alderman. Another SCF user in a different ward also reported that his or her alderman said the same thing (http://seeclickfix.com/issues/1517425). The deputy director of emergency management said “The last thing we want to do is give somebody a ticket for not doing [their] sidewalk" (http://wtnh.com/2015/02/03/uncleared-sidewalks-against-the-law/). It's totally irresponsible on the part of the city. They are putting their citizens in danger and they are passing on a large source of revenue. Near me are several properties that have not cleared their sidewalks since the January 26 snowfall. If the city started ticketing on January 28th, one of two things could have happened: 1) the delinquent properties would be motivated by the tickets and clear their sidewalks, or 2) the city would collect $4300 for each property (so far). Passing up the opportunity to improve citizens' safety while also throwing away that much money is inappropriate for a city that runs a deficit of millions of dollars ($4.5 million in 2012-2013, $8 million in 2011-2012, http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/Finance/pdfs/FY%202015-16%20Mayors%20Budget1.pdf)

We are closing older snow issues in order to get ready for winter season 2017 -2018. We reviewed snow issues from SCF along with our field notes and adjusted where we can. Thanks for reporting and helping us plan for this coming season.
