Jeremy, writing to you as Safety Chairman for Journal Square Community Association. Many students cross here from the Heights to Dickinson High School. Please make sure there are safe crossings for pedestrians in the intersection during this construction.

Cross the street and use the open sidewalk…….. false complaints like this just because you don’t like construction prevent the city from addressing actual issues.

We need some kind of pedestrian safety in this intersection. It is extremely dangerous crossing Baldwin, I can’t even imagine in a few mints when the 2 new buildings are done and 500 new people come to the area!

The Contractor closed the fence when they were finished working. The eastside of the street is fully open.

Is anyone from the city spot-checking this construction site for violations? There have been many, many reported but the city only sometimes acts if there's a complaint. Someone should be showing up there unannounced several times a week, in light of their track record.

Construction Code does various spot checks and also reviews all complaints on SCF related to the actual site. Engineering reviews when complaints come through SCF and by other means, when there is a complaint about the right of way. If there is an ongoing issue of this intersection, outside of construction, put in a request for a pedestrian safety study at this intersection. The City does have a great deal of requests, over 200, but we are going to prioritize and keep an ongoing list where we will be able to get to a certain amount per year, given available funding. I know this is a very quickly changing area and these issues are important.

Thank you for replying. I'm glad to know the city sometimes checks the area, but I have to say I don't think it is often enough. Is there not some inspector who drives this way who can go through morning or evening a few times a week? It is the whole PATH Plaza area -- Baldwin at 139, all of Pavonia past the PATH, Summit Ave. and the corner of Sip and Bergen.
I have the police checking there several times a week for after hours working and again, there are CONSTANT complaints about the sidewalks being closed without any flagmen present or walking alternatives provided. I'm not that sympathetic to the "strollers and scooters" lobby, but people have to walk through this area to get to and from the PATH. If there is a street or sidewalk closure, detour signs should be put up far in advance, both timewise and distance.
