Unfortunately, automatic traffic enforcement (red light cameras, speed cameras, stop sign cameras) are not allowed under NJ state law. Although automatic traffic enforcement has been proven, with substantial data, to reduce illegal behavior and injuries to all road users, members of the NJ legislature oppose these measures. If you would like to see this changed, I would recommend reaching out to State Senators Brian Stack and Sandra Cunningham and State Assemblypeople Annette Chaparro and Raj Mukherji.

In the meantime, I agree that this intersection should be studied and there should be additional enforcement. Jersey City is quickly becoming known as the place where the police just do not enforce traffic laws.

Summit avenue and JFK are very congested and busy intersections both for pedestrians and motor vehicles.

I have asked for a review along with other residents regarding a traffic light to be placed on sherman place/summit avenue as pedestrians and motor vehicle accidents are common on these intersections because of the lack of good visibility in all directions.

What has helped even though it made the road more narrow, was the white high visibility pylons that are currently bent or missing from when they were previously installed on the same corner you are talking about.

Unfortunately due to our various weather and road conditions, they don’t last as long as they should.

Regardless, we live in a busy city and it pays for everyone to be cautious regardless of how you are traveling.

Recently we have more and more electric scooters/ebikes driving around with and without helmets, no insurance, no registration, on the road, on the sidewalk, you name it.

When I’m walking on the sidewalk I’m more terrified of being ran over by an ebike than crossing the street.
