The shopping cart was obviously STOLEN from the Stop & Shop on Whalley Ave, by someone with a child small enough to fit into the toy cockpit. It sat on the sidewalk in front of the house across the street for several days until someone (under cover of darkness) pushed it onto the Mall. I think the word "abandoned" is a slightly nicer form of "dumped".
