A bicycle is a vehicle of traffic, and as such, is to abide by the same rules as an automobile-check the law, it's available online. Besides that is NOT a designated bike route.
Sidewalk riding is also prohibited by City Ordinance, but Yale Security feels it is above the law and sets a very bad example for all.

Maybe we're thinking of different pathways. The one that runs behind Peabody and empties into the intersection of hillhouse and sachem is not a city sidewalk but university property with signs depicting a cyclist and a pedestrian and the words "share the path". I guess they have to cross the sidewalk to enter the street, but so does a car pulling out of a driveway...

There's a difference between "entering" the roadway and flying across a PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK without regard for anyone's safety.

The University should know better than to encourage riders to break the law and ride on the sidewalk. At best they should put up another sign that says "You are leaving a private property path for bikes and are entering public space-please abide by the traffic laws and City ordinance's by NOT riding on the sidewalk and using crosswalks for bicycles

This is not just a Yale issue or about Yale being above the law. All over New Haven, Fair Haven, and East Haven people ride their bikes, often very quickly, on the sidewalks. I live in East Rock and see it there all the time despite the fact that there are bike lanes in the streets. I am in Fair Haven and East Haven often, and I have many times had to dodge bikes on the sidewalk, especially on Grand Avenue. It happens in downtown New Haven, on Chapel, Temple, College Streets, all the time by people who are obviously not associated with Yale. It happens in the Wooster Square area as well, by people who are not associated with Yale. So simply placing the blame on Yale is unfair. Yes, the Yale police need to be more vigilant and crack down on people who do it on campus, but the New Haven police need to do the same in the rest of the city. I am a cyclist myself, and I never use the sidewalks with on my bike. But I see plenty of other people all over the city doing it. On the one hand, I can understand them because people drive like absolute maniacs here, and the streets in many places are in such unsafe conditions for a bike that I would prefer to be on the sidewalk myself. On the other hand, there are city ordinances that should be respected. Unless the city as a whole -- the city government, the police, and normal citizens as well -- start having a little more respect for each other, for the law, and start educating themselves about the law and providing a safe environment for everyone, nothing will change.
