Thank you for contacting the City of Huntsville. We have reassigned your service request to the Animal Service Department and a representative will respond shortly.
Thank you for reporting this sighting. This is going to be a coyote. Yes, we are unable to trap coyotes. They are very bright and seemingly impossible to trap. The most successful program to destroy a coyote is using a fire arm which is unsafe to use inside the city limits. It isn't uncommon to see coyotes during the day, but yes, the first time you see one, it's startling. Basically coyotes, just like birds, squirrels, deer, rabbits, etc. that live inside the city lose their fear of being seen by a human. Although counter-intuitive they are not dangerous for humans, but do pose a threat for cats and small dogs. We recommend absolutely no outdoor dog or cat food and even discourage bird feeders. Mulch gardens and compositing can attract wildlife too. A food source and a den (place to have young) are what all urban wildlife is seeking. Being inside a city makes living much easier for wildlife due to the abundance of both of these resources
