Road has been on our internal list of "repave" but until such time we will continue to monitor. Potholes can be patched. Scabs, as photo displays, are sometimes better taken care of by shim pave and/or repaving. We will check as soon as we can. Thanks
We certainly appreciate your acknowledgment, but the truth is that photo is a section of a 1/4 mile road heavily trafficked by people cutting from Forest to Central every work day as well as on the weekends for football, tennis, lacrosse, etc. events. That photo shows a single 10-foot section of a roadway that has 4-5 inch deep by 12-18 inch wide potholes, virtual sinkholes and a network of scabs throughout. You cannot travel on either side safely. The "scabs" have attempted to be covered since 2011 to no avail. It would be a shame for someone visiting New Haven to see an event or game and parked (illegally, though that's a separate issue) on the street to step out of their car and injure themselves in a pothole. We understand there are potholes throughout the city and areas of heavier traffic and more importance. The frustration comes at the history of marking this issue "resolved" when it has never been and the apparent lack of actual investigation - which would show that patches have not and will not work.
DPW, what is the anticipated timing for the repaving - 2014, 2015? - and is the repaving going to happen in conjunction with speed humps or other traffic-calming measures as I understand have been in the works for a number of years?
Resource Allocation Committee met several times in July and August to better utilize available resources citywide and to coordinate projects such as paving with traffic calming measures.
New Haven Independent has been covering each meeting so you can read about paving/streets aspect here:
http://www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/city_close_to_approving_public_works/ Several other articles covered streets and sidewalk projects.
Still no estimated date for repaving as of yet. Once RAC has final decisions we will post on website.
The most recent list from the RAC at http://www.newhavenindependent.org/archives/upload/2014/07/14-15_Paving_List_RAC_mgt_7-24-2014.pdf shows Cleveland Road MAYBE slated for milling & paving in FY15-16. Don't know how Cleveland's PCI (pavement condition index) rating of 46 compares to other streets, but there appear to be a good number of streets with even worse conditions. I'm not saying Cleveland Road doesn't deserve repaving - I know firsthand it's in a horrible state - but my guess is it will take at least another year of steady pressure on the two Alders to get it done.
As for once the street is repaved, it will likely become a desired speedway between Forest and Central, Option #1 for many morning commuters, unless something substantial is done to slow drivers down. While I've heard of efforts for speed humps and/or other traffic-calming measures since Greg Dildine's tenure as Alderman (perhaps dating back to Ina's years, even?) I don't know whether a Complete Streets application has been put in requesting this. Does anyone know? Happy to assist with an effort to do so if that's needed. Paint and bollards to create some crosswalks, maybe a mini circle at Alden and/or some "choke" points on the road would go a long way to slowing things down.
Cleveland Road was paved in Fall 2015. Issue resolved. If you need to report another issue please submit to See Click Fix or call Department of Public Works at (203) 946 - 7700. Thanks.
