Oh we have been trying for years...many neighbors have met with him to discuss the issue and possible solutions but he does nothing.

Did the neighborhood fill out a Complete Streets project request form for this area?

I would at least try to get some votes here publicly. The schools do receive alerts on these issues.
Its definitely an issue if the Principle of a New Haven Public School is dismissive of neigborhood concerns.

Anna M., President of the City Point Historic District Neighborhood Assoc. has been very active in working on the Complete Streets project for all of City Point (including the portion north of the highway). If you live in the historic district, you should have her contact info.

Maybe my understanding is incorrect, but I thought that for small, individual items a Complete Streets form is not required. We are going to use a Complete Streets application for a larger scale traffic calming plan, but not for individual concerns (however, the individual concerns will be part of the comprehensive plan).

In any case, it seems that removable speed tables will be ideal for the 2 very small streets that lead directly to and from the school. I'd like to see if the city can install these (2 on Sea Street between South Water and Howard; and 2 or 3 on South Water) within the next month. Not sure if the city can post a response here on this.....

adding to my last comment: the speed tables are considered "temporary" in that they are removable and I do not think that the require a Complete Streets application to be installed....

Those sound like great ideas to me, Anna.

Although individual intersections can certainly form the basis of a complete streets request, I definitely agree that it is best to wrap improvements into a larger scale plan when possible. It is also more likely to get traction. As they say, "Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men's blood and probably themselves will not be realized."

You need to take it to the Superintendent. The principal has no jurisdiction over the buses. Good luck!

What ever happened with the speed tables?

To "curious"...while I don't know who you are, you are clearly a neighbor. The traffic calming work for the neighborhood has sort of hit a road block due to lack of interest.

It is my intent that it WILL get done, but it will not work unless more people get involved/show an interest (we need a lot of neighborhood buy in and cohesive support for whatever measures we collectively decide on, in order for the city to seriously consider the investment).

clarification: when I say "lack of interest", I do not mean that people do not care about traffic calming, but that when it comes to getting involved and working toward coming to consensus as a neighborhood, the majority of people have not gotten involved.

There are many options for "traffic calming" whether it be speed tables, bump outs, bike lanes, traffic circles, textured pavement....solutions for small streets, like Sea St. will be different than effective solutions for large, wide avenues, such as Howard Ave. Anyway, I invite you to get involved.

At the Nov. 16, 2011 meeting of the Hill South Management Team Jim Travers, Director of the Dept. of Transportation, Traffic & Parking, announced that his dept. was applying for a Community Development Block Grant to fund an initial traffic calming project for Howard Ave. (including the City Point portion, i.e. Lamberton St. to South Water St.). This would include repainting all pedestrian crosswalks at every intersection from Congress Ave. to S. Water St., adding 1 or 2 "Yield to Pedestrian" signs in the crosswalk in EVERY ONE of these intersections (Yeah!!!) AND adding a bike lane to each side of Howard Ave. from Congress Ave. to South Water St. (thereby effectively narrowing the automobile portion of Howard). He acknowledged that this was merely a preliminary step in traffic calming for our neighborhood, and that other elements could be added later, such as bump-outs at some intersections.

City should install speed bumps. At the corner of Howard Ave. and Sea St. NO ONE STOPS at the stop signs with the blinking red light. Once on Howard Ave.Turning onto and coming from where the bridge is they put the petal to the metal. I guess they'll wait until someone gets killed crossing the street before they do anything. I also think if they close off Sea St. it will become much safer.

The speeding issue on this street has not been resolved. Let's continue to work on it until it can be addressed in a systematic way.
