You sound like somebody who doesn’t live on this actual block and uses it as a cut through to avoid traffic elsewhere. I, on the other hand, live on this block. You talk about making sense; does it make sense for there to be near daily head-on collisions because people are too impatient to queue for traffic lights and instead choose to speed down the wrong side of the road? Does it make sense that parents bringing their children to the two schools (one at St Pauls and Skillman, the other at St Pauls and Kennedy) can’t cross the street, even after the city put flashing lights, because many people don’t follow NJ law that requires drivers to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk?
The planter doesn’t even take away the ability for traffic to travel down the street, it just slows people down approaching the intersection where people cross, makes it harder for people to drive on the wrong side of the road, and makes it harder for trucks to use the street illegally.
If you don’t like it, use Tonnele Circle from Kennedy, Newark Ave, Sip Ave, Manhattan Ave, etc…

LlamaLlama, sit outside and you’ll notice it’s making traffic worse.
For the “local resident,” I live here. You prob moved here a handful years ago while I’ve been here for 28 years (said it in my previous post). We can have an in person conversation if you would like to talk this but won’t reply to you any further.

Llama llama, totally agreed! As someone who lives in this neighborhood, and every day faces nearly getting mowed over by cars cutting through and/or racing to the light (even with a stroller in tow), I’m in favor of any measure to make this neighborhood safer for all of us on foot, especially the school children who attend the school on the corner. If this is an inconvenience to those using our neighborhood to cut through, well then, go around.
One day in and I’ve already noticed how much the roundabouts have slowed down all the speed racers. Really appreciate the folks from the city who are paying attention to what we’re struggling with here, thank you!!

How long a person has lived here has no bearing on their right to live on a safe street.
Happy to speak in person if you’d prefer.

Hi Tim - congestion and getting in and out of the block. I’m all for addressing an issue but not by creating other issues.
Anonymous user, sure - let me know when and where. Can be somewhere completely public for the safety of both. Thanks.

Love this pilot project! Not only do I want to see it be made permanent but hope we do this elsewhere too. These are residential streets that are in desperate need traffic calming measures. The people of the neighborhood deserve to feel safe crossing their streets.
More, please.

It would make sense to ensure that pedestrians are safe as well as children. Maybe a traffic light may help because what they’ve done right now is only making matters worse and doesn’t make sense.
I was almost hit today by a vehicle as they were trying to navigated and had their eyes on the side of the road to ensure they don’t hit a car instead of what’s in front of them.
The PDF is not an externally shared link, so can’t provide feedback. The hyperlink on the JCNJ site is also broken.

So now you are backing up traffic more on St. Paul's west of Tonnele -- already a disaster because of the Witt Pen; on Tonnele in both directions, where regularly traffic cannot clear the intersections before the lighr changes; and soon Van Winkle Ave., a short one-way street -- will bear the brunt of this.
Can't we start with adjusting the timing of the traffic signals to move traffic more efficiently, and station police on St. Paul's to keep the trucks off it? While we're at it, why can't we have a weight limit on trucks in the entire neighborhood? A big truck went down Dey St. a couple of months ago and hit three parked cars. And there really isn't enough room for big trucks to make the turn from Dey St. onto Senate and by the way, where are they going there anyway?
Newark Ave. between Tonnele and JFK is a disaster 18 hours a day and no one in the right mind would drive on it. So these "rotaries" are really limiting our ability to get out of the neighborhood, and presenting a public safety issue because of access for emergency vehicles.

With all due respect, while the questionnaire is a good idea, I don't think it covers the breadth of the problem. And I would also like to ask why the neighborhood didn't receive any official notice of this experiment. NOTHING WHATSOEVER.

A notice was placed at each residence on the street sections that would have complete closures for installation and removal, so not the entire length of St Pauls. If you are within that project range and you did not receive the notice, I am really sorry about that.
Notification was not given to St Pauls only because it was felt ONLY St Pauls would be affected, it was given ONLY to those that would need to move their cars or would need to get out of their street because it would be closed for a certain time period. Paving my street will greatly impact many blocks around me, but only my one block was given notice for my block being shut down so I would not be blocked from leaving my home and missing work. It was not a decision of who would be impacted, but who would need to move their cars for a full street shut down for installation and removal.
