NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The Regional Water Authority is putting out an alert about discolored water or low water pressure for some residents of Branford, East Haven and New Haven.
The utility says there was an electrical failure in East Haven. A recorded message on the utility’s emergency phone line says:
If you are calling about low pressure or discolored water in the Branford, New Haven or East Haven area, this is due to the redirection of water to your area as a result of an electrical failure at our Lake Saltonstall raw water conservation early this morning. Reverse flow in water mains can stir up naturally occurring sediment in the pipes and can cause the water to appear tinted. You may wish to review the conditions of your water before use, and you may choose to use bottled water for drinking.
There is no time table right now on just when the problem will be fixed.
Yes our toilet and bathroom sink are brown but the kitchen isn't. Just saw a story from nbc on Facebook that there's a water pressure issue so sediment in the pipe is coming thru the water and they want ppl to drink bottled water til the issue is fixed.
Please feel free to e-mail ask.info@rwater.com if discoloration persists beyond 4pm today. The Company press release issued Tuesday afternoon is reprinted below. Update this morning is that the pumps were up and running by early last evening, water pressure is back to normal, and and service is restored at Lake Saltonstall with these alternate pumps. Residual discoloration still exisits, and the RWA will post an official update later in the day.

People in Branford, East Haven and the eastern part of New Haven may be experiencing low water pressure and discolored water due to an electrical failure early this morning at the pumps that supply water to the Lake Saltonstall Water Treatment Plant. Regional Water Authority crews have made operational changes to the system to be able to continue to supply water to the area and will be working throughout the night to restore water pressure.
One of the operational changes was to reverse the normal flow of water in some of the water mains. This allows the Authority to provide water from other sources to customers in the area. Reversing the flow can stir up naturally occurring sediment in the pipes and cause the water to appear tinted. Customers may wish to review the conditions of their water before use, and may choose to use bottled water for drinking. Customers can also put water in a pitcher and let the sediment settle to the bottom, using the clear water on top for drinking. It is best to refrain from doing laundry, especially of light colored clothing, until the discoloration clears up.
At this time, the situation is still fluid, so no estimates can be given on when water pressure will return to normal or when discoloration will clear up. Another update will be issued tomorrow morning, July 9, at 9:00 a.m.
