Agree that this is a serious issue and that schools are critical locations for improved pedestrian safety. For a link to the Mayor's response on the subject of in street pedestrian signs, please see http://www.newhavensafestreets.org/2008/08/response-from-mayor-destefano-on-in.html. If you have specific requests for the signs, I would suggest contacting your Aldermen or the City's Department of Transportation and referencing this letter. Best wishes on efforts to make safer streets in this neighborhood.
I sometimes sit for 5 or 6 minutes with a baby carriage as cars buzz by oblivious. It is a disgrace. I have seen small children, the elderly, and one poor woman in a wheelchair wait at a crosswalk for motorists to decide to do the right thing. What makes it even more dangerous is that if one kind soul does stop there is no guarantee that the negligent drivers in the other lane of traffic will. I've almost been hit several times.
I have to say honestly, we've brought this up to our Alderwoman with no answer. Where do we go next? Is it going to take a tragedy to get a simple pedestrian stop sign?
You should contact the department about getting signs. A pilot program on signs was successful last year so now they are installing them all across the city. If an in road sign won't work, maybe something by the side of the road like what Hamden does?
I haven't heard that we were getting one. If 35 were put up the rest of the city, we should definitely get one then, due to the traffic, school, and park. Keep me posted if you hear anything.
This is still not fixed. What should I do next? I already spoke to the Mayor, the Alderwoman, and nothing is being done. The crosswalk is right where the school is so there is a school and a park. This is really a desperate issue.
Living on Townsend Ave. is like living next to I-95. The cars are constantly speeding and it is dangerous to cross the street. We absolutely need pedestrian crossing signs or speed bumps to slow these cars down. We definitly need one on Townsend and Girard.
I spoke to someone at the City of New Haven two days ago. He told me that since it's a state road, the state wil be taking care of it. Apparently, the state has a bunch of locations that are on the list to get signs for, this is one of them and the sea wall is another. He said that it will probably go up one day but couldn't give me a target date. I already wrote a letter to Looney with no direct response from him yet. Let's hope this gets fixed. Lets keep after them.

We still need a crosswalk sign, the crosswalk sign we had is gone again. We really need a light to be quite honest. This road is dangerous, cars do not stop. I've been in the middle of the road crossing and cars still do not slow down.
We have been dealing with this issue for years and nothing has been done. I have spoken to our Alderman Sal DeCola and I was told to start a petition for a light. He hasn't been any help and Mr. Travers hasn't helped either. There is no reason why we can't get a blinking caution light and a cross walk button you can push to turn red when you want to cross. Why is East Shore getting the run around?
Not a response yet. A bunch of crap about why we can't have a traffic sign installed, etc. The pedestrian sign is still not in the correct spot. It's there, but not in the middle of the road. Also, our crossing guard was nearly hit today by a car. Cars do not stop at this crosswalk. What do we need to do to get this fixed?

what an eye opener! As I waited at the crosswalk in front of Nathan Hale School with my wife and three small children Alderman Sal DeCola buzzes on by without even a pause. Nothing is being done, nothing will be done. This is one of the reasons why politics disgusts me.
