Since this is an ongoing problem in the neighborhood, we need to be extra vigilant. (KenCT, I bet anything one of those packages was mine. Hope the thief really enjoys that copy of Augustine's City of God and the "Frog and Toad" book! Sheesh.) Can someone closer to law enforcement tell us what we should do if we see someone going through a mailbox that's not theirs? (Mine is *on* my front porch. Anyone rooting around in there would definitely stand out as someone who shouldn't be doing that.) Should we confront the person, or call police?

Which half of Lyon are you on? We strangely received NO mail today.
I've been wondering what this mailman's policy is. Sometimes he leaves packages and sometimes does not. I've been alarmed at the times he has, leaving packages in plain sight.

For any mail theft issues you must call postal inspection service. This is a federal offense punishable with jail time and fines. Call yr local postmaster for inspection service or look in the bluepages of the phone book . New Haven postmaster can be reached at 203-782-7011

On the more practical side, I highly recommend not having any packages shipped to your home unless there's someone who can grab them during the day for you. We have a terrific mail person who will actually hide our packages for us, but unless you have that, ship them to an address where there's a person available to grab them--someone other than the thief! Or ship them to your work, etc. Sorry this happened to you; it sucks!

Thanks for the support. Yes, I will definitely have *everything* shipped to my work address from now on. Our wonderful postman also takes pains to hide larger items, but since these ones fit fully into the mailbox it didn't seem necessary. Such a bummer.
