Sidewalks abutting city property (Swiniuch Park) are glare ice. Please treat/de-ice as this is obviously a pedestrian and ADA hazard, especially on a corner (Derby & Bentley).
  • 193 Derby Street Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
Note, actual address is a utility pole across from 180 Derby St (Brookhouse), but that and the Customs House (#176) don't seem to come up in the database here.
Please remove the sign requiring masks in public places from this utility pole. This has been N/A for what, two years? and may confuse visitors/tourists. Thank you.

Received this [screenshot] in email re: case #13553757. Yes! That *has* been outstanding for 31 days! Why is that? And now you send an email stating, please comment - but there IS no commenting as noted, "Public commenting and status changes are not available for this issue." How bad is our IT department??? They can't get the parking pass page fixed, and they send out totally useless emails, doubling the frustration. How about putting someone on this to fix both? Thanks so much.

Resident Parking Passes, city web page. Three documents required, but only two buttons are available for upload, driver's license and proof of residency. Vehicle registration is also required, but there is nowhere to upload it.
  • 15 Hardy Street Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem

Salt!!! in garden soil, and not just here. Last night's treatment once again spread excessive salt, but worse, 8' onto sidewalks and private property. Further down, there's another garden bed that got hit with it. Bad for the environment, soil & plants, dog paws, vehicle paint, and what about the new sidewalks? And the city budget?

It's also piled up against my old cement foundation. It is now all swept into the street. I'm noting this for future reference...

Can drivers PLEASE adjust the spreaders on these cow path side streets? I looked at my history, and this isn't new. Other reports go back to '15 at least. Thanks.

PS I couldn't get the address to pin correctly with your map. All the salt is on the other side of the street from 15 Hardy.

I am so hoping the "tree team" can upright (and stake?) and save this one. It's so pretty! And the roots aren't too far out of the ground. Go DPW!
  • 140 Derby St Salem, MA, 01970, USA - City of Salem
One of two supports for a newly planted tree has been broken in two. Pls replace. This is a very new tree! Thanks.

The sidewalks abutting Swiniuch park (city property), and also the corner of the park itself at the corner of Derby and Bentley, are glare ice. The sidewalk there going down Bentley is like a snow mogul course, too. Please rectify the situation, as that trash barrel is well used, it's slick as the devil; and that's quite a stretch to walk in the street. Also, can we please have a sand barrel there as we have had in prior years? Thank you.

Not just Hardy St, but a number of side streets in this area are deep in road salt, and it's piled in inches in some spots. It's also densely "applied" all over (new) sidewalks. The worst: It was also shot onto *private properties* - garden soil that could be toxified (will be, if this keeps up). and onto new paving (cost $thousands) in our parking lot.

How can this not be hitting parked cars, too? It's also bad for dog paws, and it tracks into houses. Great for pine floors... but that's rather minimal, compared to killing soil and damaging new paving, potentially.

Also note that Derby St,. the main drag, has little to no salt on it. The spreaders on the trucks can be adjusted in the cab, I believe, so there's no excuse for not narrowing it on the side streets.

The city was notorious for over salting a number of years, then they started getting it right. PLEASE get it right again.

  • Hardy St At Derby Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

Third attempt on this one, maybe it will be a charm.

Report 1 - The old casting was removed and a new smaller one installed. Thought it was fixed (the issue was closed), but oh, wait, it wasn't really fixed. The replacement casting started sinking into the ground again, so I entered...

Report 2 - 'Salem MA Dir. of Capital Projects & Municipal Operations' in its wisdom archived this as a duplicate of #1. It's not. It was never properly fixed. Thus, here is...

Report 3 - The thing is still sinking into the ground; and I'm going to guess that this is a water shutoff. I suppose it's attached to a water line! We await a geyser?

Ms. C in Engineering, I spoke w/you about this before, and they did make that first (non) repair. Can we pls get this fixed for good? Thank you.

  • Hardy St At Derby Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
Refer to Issue ID: 3116888, also. The previous larger square casting that was sinking, and around which the pavement was disintegrating (sinkhole) was replaced by a circular one. (Water shutoff?). Now that one is sinking, also. It did start out level with the pavement!
  • Hardy And Derby St Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

This really needs to be fixed before full winter. It's a walking hazard as well as for traffic and plows. Is it water access? We don't want to learn this the hard way. Thanks.

PS If you're going to bring hot top (heaven willing), pls address case #3093361, too!

  • Hardy St Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
Refer to photo. I've noticed a lot of cars parked right under that sign, can't imagine why! This is a safety issue, as emergency vehicles would have a difficult time (impossible?) making the corner. This is located just in back of Ye Olde Pepper Co, left off Derby. Thanks.
  • Hardy & Derby Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
The pavers are in the area, patching all those "transitional" strips at the end of streets that have had the first layer of new pavement laid. The Derby end of Hardy is still a mess. This will not bode well with winter temps, plows, precipitation, etc. It could also be hazardous to pedestrians.
  • 126 Derby St Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

Something is rotting in Salem! There is a gawd awful odor coming from the side yard to the rear of 126 Derby, an absentee landlord situation. It's quite noticeable on adjacent properties, and it's no pleasure being out in the yard. It's enough to gag a maggot, and my guess is that there are quite a few there. The heat isn't helping and it's not even gotten super hot yet.

I called the Board of Health about this a couple of weeks ago, as I'd seen a rat in the area, also. She said she'd see if someone could come down, and that's the last I heard.

I would very much appreciate this being addressed by Tuesday close of business. Thanks!

  • Derby St Neighborhood Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

Once again, there is a lot of road salt all over the sidewalks, up against fragile basement walls, and in the soil in garden and planted areas. (It's even on the step of Ye Olde Pepper Company.) Additionally, if the salt is flying that far, it's hitting parked vehicles. Do we have the money to salt outside the curbs? And it's certainly not good for the paws of the huge canine population here (albeit that may be a lesser concern to some).

Can you pls have DPS narrow the area that the spreaders cover when salting our cow paths? Just the roadway would be ideal.

This problem goes back at least ten years. I have photos back to 2006; so please consider this my annual plea to damp down the spreaders.

    Thank you.

  • Blaney St Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

The planted areas are a mess. The beds were nice and tidy when first done last year (although the transplanting was really slipshod, with plants sticking half way out of the ground and then covered with mulch), but are now being overcome with weeds. In addition, many of the grass-like plants are dead; and there's construction debris in at least one of the beds.

The grass "hydroseed" was sprayed on way too late last season and thus never got a chance to grow. Those areas (by the White St garden and all along the Footprint fence) are now reverting to weeds.

What's the sense of having landscaping if it won't be maintained?

The weeds in the beds aren't the usual ones that grow down there, so I suspect they were brought in with the new mulch. I realize they're still working the site, but that's no excuse not to take care of what's already done. If I were the city, I'd be asking the contractor for a do-over on all this, or if possible, take credit or short pay them. Bad!

  • 16 Hardy Street Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

We know there are issues, but we've never had NO pick in this area that I can recall in over 20 years. They're usually done by 11 at the latest.

Recycling was picked up, not trash.

  • Salem Prep - 114 Derby St Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem
The sidewalk in front of Salem Prep is untouched. As the lessee of the Emmerton Settlement House, I believe the city is responsible for clearing snow from the sidewalk. Almost all of Derby St's sidewalks are passable, but for this. Thanks.
  • Wharf Street Salem, Massachusetts - City of Salem

I was told that the walkway along the water on the wharf property is public access and as such is to be kept clear at all times. This might not be an issue if boats weren't occupied by people who live on them, and there are a number. Emergency services would have quite a time getting to any boat there. Perhaps fire could inspect?

In the photo, the security door to the marina is ajar. The snow there is up to the top of the railing.
