Lane on Route 9 east terminates into an exit for the Mass Pike, without an sign indicating the lane is "exit only"
  • Interstate 90 & Cambridge St Boston, MA 02134, USA - Allston-Brighton
On the off ramp from the Mass Pike eastbound, there are no lane markings. Photo shows confused cars. Are there 2 lanes? 3? 1?

Always panhandlers here. Not the ideal way to welcome people to Boston. State trooper was on detail about 200 feet away and didn't seem to have interest.

There are no lane markings as Route 2 approaches the intersection of Route 16 and Fresh Pond Parkway. It's not clear if the right-hand lane can travel left or if it can only travel right. Many motorists bear left, squeezing into the lane that heads toward Route 16, which doesn't seem to be designed for 2 lanes of traffic, but there are no markings, so it's not clear how it's intended. The same applies to the left-hand lane. It can possibly travel straight, while someone in the right-hand lane tries to travel left, which would cause a crash. But custom doesn't seem to allow that. See photo for illustration.

As you exit here for Harvard Square, it's not clear if it's a two lane exit or a single lane exit. Perhaps on purpose? As you can see in the overhead image, the lane marking diverges slightly to possibly indicate a two lane exit. Or not? We don't know. The lane markings end before we can find out.

Panhandlers frequent this intersection and often walk amidst traffic during rush hour, creating potential for a dangerous accident.

During one of the recent storms, the Fainwood Circle street sign fell off and is now missing. Would be great if the city could replace it.

Large sign indicating the exit ahead (Harvard Square) fell down in a storm over two years ago. It has never been replaced. The posts are still standing with nothing on them. There is lots of traffic to this exit by out-of-towners who are visiting Harvard and the general area, and there has not been a sign directing them to this exit for quite some time.

Drivers are continually swerving into the wrong lanes at this intersection because the lane markings are unclear.

Left lane: Some seem to believe this is a left-turn only lane.

Middle lane: Some do not bump right when cross Memorial Drive and instead veer into the left lane, possibly because of the "left lane" comment above. Other times, people turn left from the middle lane, cutting off people in the left lane who are continuing straight.

Right lane: Designated as a right turn only lane, but this is not clear as many drivers continue straight when in this lane.

There are no signs to help drivers understand which lanes have which rules, nor are there any signs indicating that the road they are approaching is Memorial Drive. This is a junction that many out-of-towners first approach when coming off the Mass Pike and it must be incredibly confusing for them.

The lane markings can be improved and start further back, perhaps toward the middle of the bridge.

Some signs need to be added, again perhaps need the middle or even beginning of the bridge, which will be helpful during times of busy traffic.

A new traffic pattern was instituted here recently. On River St at Mass Ave, the right-hand lane is now a right turn only lane. There is a lane marking, but I don't believe there are any signs. Regardless, many drivers enter the right lane and then proceed straight through the intersection. It's not clear that there is a right turn only lane here and the signage needs improvement.

  • 25 Prospect St Cambridge, Massachusetts - The Port
new lane markings were painted for a new traffic pattern but the old ones are still visible, especially at night and in bad weather, making it unclear what side of the road you're supposed to be on
  • Soldiers Field Rd Boston, MA - Allston-Brighton
On the access road to Soldiers Field Road/Storrow Drive eastbound, between Western & River, near the entrance to the Mass Pike, the lane markings for the right-most two lanes have worn off. All other lane markings are present and visible. This has led some drivers to not realize that it's a two-lane area; they presume there's only one lane available.
