  • 4540 Ashford Dunwoody Road Northeast Atlanta, Georgia - Dunwoody
There is a left turn only lane for northbound traffic on Ashford-Dunwoody to turn onto Perimeter Center West. While there is an overhead sign, by the time a driver in the left lane sees it, there is not enough time and distance to merge to the right. Because Ashford-Dunwood is curved to the left at that point, a driver moving from the left only lane to the right lane is not easily seen by the approaching traffic in the right lane. The left only lane should be marked at least a block (or two) further back from where the lane becomes a left only lane to give the driver more warning that the left lane is a left only lane.
  • 7200-7400 Ashford Center Parkway Dunwoody, Georgia - Dunwoody
Ashford Center Parkway is a divided 4-lane. When approaching Chamblee-Dunwoody from the West, the left lane becomes a left turn only lane. The only notification the drive gets is about 50 feet before the intersection with an arrow painted on the pavement. Because the right lane gets backed up before this arrow, drivers in the left lane do not have adequate time and distance to change lanes if they do not intend to turn left. Quite often, they try to go straight on Womack from the left lane squeezing two lanes into the one right lane. What is needed are more signs further away from the intersection (200 or 300 feet), either overhead or on posts, to notify the driver that he is in a left turn only lane.
  • The Perimeter Atlanta, Georgia - Dunwoody

From a registered, professional engineer's view point -

The traffic light issues on Till Mill Road at Peeler Road and Tilly Mill Road at North Peachtree Road can be directly traced back to the "Diverging Diamond" at Ashford-Dunwood Road and the traffic light at Peachtree-Dunwoody. Because of the traffic lights on the west bound I-285 exit ramp turning right onto Ashford-Dunwoody, the traffic cannot move as freely as it once did before the "Diverging Diamond". This slows the traffic on I-285 West back to Peachtree Industrial. This causes Peachtree Industrial to back up which then causes westbound drivers to bailout onto Tilly Mill Road and Winters Chapel Road. Drivers on Winters Chapel Road then use Peeler Road which then runs back into Tilly Mill Road. That is why Peeler and Tilly Mill are now becoming backed up when they did not before the Ashford-Dunwoody "Diverging Diamond". Also, Perimeter College traffic uses the same Tilly Mill and Winters Chapel Roads along with North Peachtree Road, which just adds to the traffic flow problems. If you could fix the problems up stream at Peachtree-Dunwood and Ashford-Dunwood, the rest of the system would flow much quicker.

It would also help on Tilly Mill Road if the traffic signals were more "intelligent" and could recognize changes in traffic flows on both Tilly Mill and Peeler Road and at Tilly Mill and North Peachtree Roads.

Just remember that changes to any system, like adding the Ashford-Dunwood "Diverging Diamond", have consequences - sometimes unintended consequences!
