I think the roundabout is a better alternative to improving traffic flow than traffic lights. The problem I have been experiencing is that people, are inexperienced in using them. In particular, I have most often noticed elderly drivers appear confused that there are "yeild" signs and not "stop" signs. Congestion is compounded by drivers stopping and/or hesitating even when there isn't any traffic concerns. Recently, I attempted to make a right turn from Hamlin West onto Livernois North and was prevented by another driver who just stopped at the intersection and waited excessively for the roundabout to clear of all traffic. The driver then made the same turn to go northbound on Livernois. This driver clearly had a clear path and the right-of-way, but seemed confused or afraid to proceed after yeilding, and treated the signal as if it was a "stop".
Round-abouts are prevelent in many parts of Europe and have been best solutions for improving congestion at various intersections.
If drivers use appropriate speeds and caution, there is seldom any reason for the majority of traffic to come to a complete stop and therefore moves traffic more efficiently than traffic lights.
I agree with the Rochester resident, it's not so much the roundabout's themselves, it's people getting confused on whether or not they can go, and realizing they are yield signs, not stop sign's
the roundabouts are great, but the two on Farmington Rd at 14 Mile, and 15 Mile, seem to be better-designed and easier to navigate than the one at Hamlin/Livernois. Actually, the two on Farmington Rd are much better designed, and their design & specifications should be used as a standard for other roundabouts. Are you listening, RCOC?
Traffic circles have been statistically proven to increase traffic flow and reduce a persons speed while increasing a drivers awareness of surroundings. in the same way they are more environmentally friendly because cars are never left idling unnecessarily, also circles never burn out or turn off or go down in a storm. the benefits of a circle at low to medium traffic intersections are much greater than the few downsides... however if drivers do not take the effort to learn how to properly navigate circles they become hazardous. if you do not like the circle take a different route to avoid them,
I don't mind the roundabouts, but the way they got traffic flow sucks, it's only a matter of time before there is an accident, if you look at the way they have the traffic flow you will understand what I'm talking about
The roundabouts are the best thing to hit our roads since the wheel was invented. They are much more efficient than stop lights - you need only look at the backups at the adjacent stop lights to see this fact (the roundabout never has more than 2-3 cars queued while the adjacent stop lights sometimes have 15-20 cars). Additionally, the occurrence of right-angle, deadly collisions is eliminated. If people could adapt to these instead of complaining, we could all spend a lot less time sitting in traffic. We need to replace all stoplights with these things! They are prettier and cheaper to maintain (no electricity or aerial maintenance) in addition to being more efficient.
If people would learn how to use these roundabouts they wouldn't be so bad, I have had people stop right in front of me with no cars coming from any direction
