First of all, it's not Lake Topanemus Road, it's Pond Road. Secondly, you have not been around here too long, when I was young in the 50's, it was the same way, we were never allowed to go in there.
The algae is at its worst about now. Between the heat and lack of rain, the eastern portion of the lake is a swamp. I was on the lake in my kayak and it was as if I was paddling through green jello. Its horrid.
There is some great fishing here its a shame we cant keep it clean...the algae is clogging all the natural springs that are natures filters..cant we have a dredge boat in the summer? I do not think draining is the answer!!! We just did that not long ago, and because of that lost a lot of gorgeous fish...yes they shock them, but a lot die still..There has to be a way!!! I see some people use environmentally efficient algae pellets to at least kill the algae around the spring area...this has become a bit redundant cant we fix this problem!
In 2012 the lake was treated with an herbicide and algaecide which killed off the invasive weeds and algae strangling the lake. The treatments were successful in 2012. Now we must wait and see if there will be a resurgence. Freehold Township, Freehold Boro and the Lake Topanemus Park Commission provided the funds for treatment.
Finally, the lake is in good shape, but Sandy and the freak snow storm decimated the park. Trees are down all over. That is in addition to the piles of wood chips dumped throughout the park by Freehold Boro following the windstorm. It has been a tough year all around.
Since the lake has been treated with an algaecide and weed killer, it is free of the noxious weeds and slime that ruined the lake for the summer season. Though still shallow in places due to years of runoff, it is a wonderful spot for kayaking, birding, boating and fishing.
The treatment for invasive and noxious weeds has worked. For the second year in a row, the Pond is practically free from the horrible algae and weeds that prevented boating and fishing. Its still shallow on the east and northern ends due to the build up of silt. That will require more drastic and expensive measures. For now, the treatment is the best and most cost effective way to keep the Pond open for business!
