Is the stoplight here really necessary? The only time the light turns red is when pedestrians hit the button.
Wouldn't a stop sign suffice? Pedestrians and motorists wouldn't have to wait for the light to turn green/red and would be able to get on with their life. I've seen stop signs be used like this near DePaul University and motorists always stop for pedestrians (...because, you know, it's the law). I've never seen it become a problem. If anything, replacing this stoplight with a stop sign would save electricity and the patience of motorists and pedestrians. Just a suggestion.

I agree that stop sign would be preferable. At least with a stop sign, the cars on Polk would stop. I have almost been hit several times by cars that just take the turn onto Dearborn and barely look in te crosswalk. It's very hazardous.

The (useless) Ald. Fioretti pledged to return this to a stop sign several years ago but never delivered. I heard that the cost would be in excess of $250,000, which seems crazy considering its removing something.

Crossing on the north side of Polk is dangerous. This really should be fixed. I find it safer just to walk on the south side of the street these days. A stop-sign would be good, however, as someone who walks up Polk every day to Wells to take my kid to school, drivers continually violate the stop signs along there at Federal and La Salle, too, and usually disobey the "no turn on red" requirements at Clark & Polk as well.

The button no longer works. Its on a timed schedule. And since work on pavement done during Thanksgiving no crosswalk have been painted making it more dangerous
