Walk over to your neighbors house, knock on the door, ask if you can help, ask if there is a problem. If it's really really close to you, pick up a few things.
Community pride comes from good people reaching out and acting as a community.

But, but, you don't understand....it's so much easier to complain on the internet than to physically (out of the chair) reach out and act as a community. It's the new American way!

This is an issue all over Mid-town. The problem can be resolved by action by the Building Dept., they have the authority but don't use it unless pushed. Another government agency that fails to do it's job unless provoked. Go and sit at their door. I have and things will be done, eventually.

The City of Kingston has been made aware of this on-going neglect.

There are 12 places "diagonal" to the public library... I see no place at all that fits your description...

Not a single trash can put out for Monday morning Pickup - NOW on Wednesday, 3/23/2011, trash bags (broken) laying on sidewalk with other debris. Picture tells the rest. what more can one say?

Cleanup has started - BUT, definitely incomplete. Trash has been laying in front of house
all week - debris cardboard flying up & down St. This house had a VERY long-term history of this same issue. With the Kingston City Library directly across the street -- its a wonder this could happen. The post will be closed when situation is corrected.

Yard is still filled with black bags, etc. that need discarding -- Pls. continue to monitor - Neighbors want this fixed AND WHAT a horrible sight for users of the Kingston City Library and the children growing up in this area. How difficult is it to keep the place where you reside - CLEAN ? Where is the PRIDE in this neighborhood ? DPW - PLS.. stay on this UNTIL it becomes their DAILY routine! The Dept of Health needs to get involved with the City Code Depts and the Dept of Public Works and brainstorm on how to get homeowners/tenants to cleanup their houses, etc. both inside and out. including the front and rear yards! Leaving trash around could be detrimental to everyone's health!
IF Homeowners/Tenants (and some tenants are literally PUSHING homeowners out of this area) don't learn that it is THEIR responsibility -- they will NEVER DO IT. The women who owns the house in the pic provided by Anonymous has had many problems with family members and financial issues, but that is no excuse for her and her kids to not clean the yard.. She has been asked and warned but still it does not get better,, so when we see her and the kids having a yard sale this summer, ask them to clean there yard and all of the crap on both sides of it.. I heard she is trying to sell it and move out of state.. Good luck...

Ive seen some improvement with the yard since the former people left state,yes its a slow progress but still there is some.They also have worked on the inside of this house recently.As for the comment about the children in this neighborhood.the people most recently paid for a truck from the city and while the truck was in the yard the front windshield was damaged which seems to have put their yard clean up at a stand still,maybe we dont know their circumstances and they cant finacially do it all at once...atleast they have made attempts . I also believe comments about drugs directed at people we do not know is completely uncalled for.The house and former tenants have a bad reputation but its fair to carry that over to other people.Just a thought...

I stopped by and had a pleasant with the people. Yes, they are newly there, they are working on cleaning up the house, hiring a truck as finances permit to carry stuff away. I'll be leaving them my own personal contact information and give them the links to the seeclickfix comments that talk about them, which they were unaware of.

So, since Gerald Berke was here the other day, I figure I mine as well post. The people who were having there (9) kids doing "yard sales" are now living in GA , yeah it was there job . We took this house because we were trying to help a friend* . Now, the fence is gone. Yes, because some ignorant person hit it with there car and drove off. Debris.? Yeah, well if you knew how DISGUSTING this house was inside, you would understand why we had to bring it outside. Now for everyone complaining, we're trying. I'm almost 100% sure, that cleaning, taking everything out, renovating, and re furnishing this house doesn't take 1 or 2 days. We haven't been here that long, we've paid almost $300 for a truck to take the garbage away about 6 times, bought new walls, furnace, carpets, paint, wall paste,new cabinets and even a new refrigerator, oh yeah! and an electrician. ($2,000) to do our wiring because it was unsafe. Money doesn't grow on tree's, so if you wanna complain about it how about help. Other wise, keep your non-since to yourself. Maybe you people should get your information on what your complaining about before you actually complain. The only "young" kids ever here would be a 8 month old and a 2 year old which aren't usually here most of the time. Everyone else would be 21 + & we're doing what we can.

Hello, I would just like to say, i am one of the people now "occupying" the household, I do want to apologize for the buildup of debris and such, As someone below kindly posted, we have been making every attempt to rectify the situation, we have had several city trucks dropped off for us to fill and have debris and garbage removed. However after the incident with the window on the last truck, it now costs even more for the service. What it comes down to, in all brutal honesty is we are simply out of money at this time due to expenses from repairs, service people, paying for hotels to stay in. All i can promise is that we will try to remove any debris possible on garbage day etc.. and as soon as we are financially able to, the yard and house as a whole will no longer be an eyesore for the community.

Also, with all due respect, Building safety is already WELL aware of the issues, and our circumstances. Therefor there is nothing to "give up to them". No offense, we appreciate any help we may receive, we are not the same people in any way as the last people to live there, we unfortunately took over there HUGE mess and are doing our best.

To the occupants of this residence, I quietly listened to your problems, and concluded that WE ALL have problems. You had to know about the conditions of this house PRIOR to occupying it - because some of you were the same folks that lived in the abandoned house on this block and unless you are blind HAD to be aware of the conditions PRIOR to deciding to "help a friend". This is a VERY OLD STORY -- the debris and general neglect has been going on for FAR TOO LONG. It's obvious you've made a BAD decision -- one you CANNOT afford. HOWEVER the "Cleanup" is now a neighborhood problem and a 'HEALTH' issue.
Just arrange to contact the DPW tell them you're cleaning out AND get the balance of the debris out of SIGHT. (Or, with the number of folks in/out -- have a "cleanup party" -- have them ALL assist).. What you do or not do "INSIDE" the house is between you and the City of Kingston. Good Luck ! Just don't want to wake up every morning with your problems -- I'm certain WE ALL have enough of our own! Again, nothing personal just . . . CLEANUP !

We preserve our identities and privacy with "anonymous" but without that cover it may be that we would say nothing at all, and that I think would be a loss.
However, we can pick a name, use it consistently and still remain private, to be an individual and not just one of a crowd. It appears the residents have been VERY busy cleaning up the place. For two (2) days they've been packing things into a dumpster AND AWAY it goes. Thank Goodness this is FINALLY accomplished. This house has been a problem for a VERY long time with prior residents also. Perhaps the owners (whoever they are) need to find "responsible" people to maintain their property or let the bank and/or City of Kingston take it. It's just NOT fair to other neighbors. We are not moving,atleast not yet..we just had the means to get this accomplished now and we intend to keep it this way.

The owners now live in another state.They resided in the house for 11 yrs before the present people moved in so the LONG term problem was due to their lack of caring what their home looked like or the neighborhood. The people now residing there have taking awhile to clean it up but instead of more negative comments lets appreciate the fact they they cared enough to get it clean. When the owners left state they left all their furniture in the house and a yard full of crap they tried to sell and I know for a fact that the newest residents have tried to take care of this problem for some time now but had to jump a few hurdles to get were they are now. Bravo for a job well done! Please continue to keep up the good work and let us all enjoy our neigherhood as it should be.

Sorry to say my aunt jess and her family has been doing a great job on fixing it up and everything. The previous owners left it so messy and digusting i give props to my aunt jess for even taking on the job of cleaning that house the previous owners should of never let it get that dirty and now everyone is going to have to deal with it cuz the previous owners screwed my aunt jess over big time sorry love u aunt jess

Yes, there has been a great deal of cleanup done at this site & I'm certain there are LOADS of neighborhood folks that appreciate it. HOWEVER, unless your Aunt & other residents are BLIND they had to see the condition of this house PRIOR to moving in BECAUSE its been a Gigantic MESS for years. There is a lot of weeds growing all around the house & it would be a good idea to clean this up also. Monday is pickup day for trash - WHY do they leave broken down TV's, etc., and other stuff just lingering in the front of their residence? Still room for improvement; BUT a Great big Thanks to any/all that helped with the cleanup. PLEASE CONTINUE TO KEEP IT CLEAN !

The tv was suppose to be picked up by the city days ago and has yet to be...i did trim alot of the weeds and bushes down as well as rake, the actual trash out front gets picked up daily but unfortunatly the neighborhood kids go by and just throw more there, i am tryin to keep up with it and YES we did know the conditions before hand, i am one of the people that has always rushed over to help the previous owners clean up when they got fined or the city threatened them , i mistakinly thought i could clean it up and fix it up faster and im sorry it has taken so long but i dont intended to let it get like that again as long as im living in the house.

There is still a lot of growth and debris around this house, Although MUCH has been done - the work is NOT finished. Also, regarding debris that others just throw on your property is VERY unfortunate. Do you think that other neighbors are not faced with the exact same problem? ? ?
The blame game after awhile gets VERY old. First it was the previous tenants, now its others . . .
at some point one must CLEANUP their property and CLEANUP after their MANY animals WASTE -- that is just left around and smelling up the niehgborhood. With ownership comes RESPONSIBILITY -- RESPONSIBILITY - RESPONSIBILITY! CLEANUP & then sit around all day long on your porch etc. SUGGESTION: Get the MANY visitors, etc. to help. Get everyone to chip in & your HOME will eventually be a place to enjoy.

I walk by almost every day on my way to the library. The back yard still has a lot of work to be done to it, especially the run down small car in the yard, the tall weeds and the over all look at the house. It has been cleaned up so much but as Joe the Plumber has stated, there is much more to be done.

It seems that we have rather low expectations for what people will do in Midtown... some places really looks crappy but there's a lot of "understanding"... there are some very very well kept places in Midtown, and kudos for those... in fact, most properties really are nicely cared for.
How many weeks/months/years are you willing to make gentle observations? Would you find it OK if the DPW came by and found that house quite OK, just a gentle reminder that, gee, we'll be back in a couple of months and hope to see some progress.
When you don't expect much of your neighbors, that's just what you get: not much. It doesn't serve you, it doesn't serve them.

I assume you also suggest "doing something"... it would be instructive to know what people have actually done. Clean, walk, call, city hall, neighborhood group, helped a neighbor clean up... or had a neighbor help you in some way...

So let me get this straight: They are broke and that's what stops them from putting just a little bit of that trash and debris on the sidewalk on a weekly basis? Bull! They are lazy pigs, no more, no less. What a deplorable eyesore in view from our cities public library!

I also live on Franklin Street I have seen the work and effort the people at that address have done. I see a female go out almost daily cleaning up the front of the house and sidewalk from trash others throw there.I read back aways to see these people called druggies and other names they do not deserve...I dont comment or remark when i see drug deals made infront of "good" peoples homes all up and down Franklin Street yet people that dont know these people are saying things they have no right to say.NO ONES LIFE IS PERFECT AND NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO CALL OTHER PEOPLE NAMES. Although some work has been done -- MUST the residents be reminded the outside of their house (a) still has things that have to be cleaned up. (b) A mattress has been sitting o/s up against a tree in the front of this house. Can the DPW notify the residents of the new procedure regarding same. Also, (c) pets, dogs, cats, etc. need to be cleaned up after they mess - BECAUSE the odor penetrates the area. Nothing Personal intended -- just trying to Cleanup the Neighborhood.

Kudos to Aunt Jess for the JOB she's done cleaning up the front of the house, HOWEVER, the Prospect St. side of the house is still EXTREMELY untidy - weeds growing from the front to the rear - the backyard still has debris & undeneath the front steps there is debris. Quite honestly, for a house in FULL VIEW of the Kingston City Library, residents from all over come here - its a GREAT BIG EYESORE still. Nothing personal Aunt Jess, but perhaps the many gentlemen/young ladies that hang around on the porch and repair their autos can give you a little HAND!

The mattress, although laying out there for quite some time - even thru Hurricane Irene (posing a safety threat) to kids walking and riding their bikes has been taken away - thankfully!!
Passing the buck from the "prior tenants" to the "City DPW" to the "passers by" does not RESOLVE the problem(s). RESPONSIBILITY is KEY. If visitors get rewards of your hospitality, wouldn't it just be "Kind" for them to help?

The Prospect side of this house is still a GIANT mess. Both debris and overgrowth of weeds from one end of the house to the other. Brush is lingering coupled with debris in yard full site of neighbors. Are these residents waiting for VOLUNTEERS to clean up their place ? ? ? WHY, does it take SO long to do nothing.? ? ? Improvement is NOT enough -- FINISH THE JOB! The Kingston City Library is in full view of this house. Neighbors, Adults & children need to walk pass this mess to get back and forth to the Library the Hodge Center, the Church, etc.. Is this NOT an obstacle? Your NEGLECT is other neighbors problems. Would you like to invite guest to your neighborhood IF it looks like this? Have you no pride?

They have no pride is the answer Joe. These people and those like them are what keeps others from improving their homes. Why bother if next door someone lives like pigs. NEIGHBORS should be "outraged" concerning the NEGLECT of property and/or Quality of Life Issues in Midtown in General. This is clearly NOT the only house in this area that has NOT fulfilled their obligation to both their family and/or community. These "unkept houses" with debris surrounding them are " FIRE and/or HEALTH HAZARDS." Coupled with irreponsible persons (whether Drug related or NOT) driving RESPONSIBLE homeowners and tenants out of the neighborhood. Ok everybody, enough is enough. Like I suggested months ago contact the Building Department and file a complaint, there's a form online. The debris you describe is in violation of city zoning codes. If it's on the property they have the authority and responsibility to warn and fine the inhabitants. Go a step further and contact Shayne Gallo, he just won the Dems run for Mayor and currently works for the city as legal counsel responsibility for enforcing city rules and regulations. See what he does, then you'll know how good a Mayor he'll be. Warning, don't expect much from him....But the Building Dept will send an investigator. Document it, follow the process.

This past week its been noticed by several neighbors that the Prospect side of this house has been cleaned up and excessive brush has been cut down. Hopefully, the residents realize that ALL neighbors have the responsibility to pickup around their homes (whether or not it was them that created the mess). We do it ALL the time. In this area, the DPW picks up on "Monday AM" and also "Fridays for certain items". THE DPW has requested that any waste/trash be placed out for pickup the "evening PRIOR to pickup" & NOT before ! ! ! Hopefully this issue can be closed & no future complaints will be necessary.

This situation has been corrected, HOWEVER, it will be monitored BECAUSE it was a problem that existed SOoooo long - whether or not it was the new residents or the old - they definitely knew each other. It will definitely be reopened IF NECESSARY !

Yesterday, Monday, 10/17/2011, was this area's trash removal day. I've noticed there are large black bags and other debris piled up along the side of the house. Yes its in the yard, HOWEVER, - this is CLEARLY VISABLE. upon passing. I've noticed its been suggested to close this issue, HOWEVER, obviously the JOB has NOT yet been completed. Why those bags were NOT put out for pickup is beyond me.

It now appears this issues have been resolved and should be closed. Hopefully, there will NOT be any need in the future to re-open this residence.

Mattresses once again on the side of house and lots of black bags hanging around the house - that apparently haven't been placed out for trash pickup for some time. Obviously this house needs to continually be reminded of their tenant/homeowners responsibility.

This all over Kingston, the city doesn't bother enforcing any of the codes. I've been looking at mattresses on a tree on the sidewalk across from my house for over a week. The other house has put out all its rubbish Saturday for pickup Wednesday. This burg has no pride and the people WANT to live in trash, it's there right!

#54 Franklin Street - FINISH the JOB - PLEASE - Its the Holiday Season - Is this something neighbors just have to ENDURE ? ? ? Today Monday, 12/19, 2011 is pickup day for the City of Kingston's DPW -- Hopefully it will be hauled away !

Yup this is what we have to endure. The city told me even if it's a violation they 2took weeks to clear it before the city does and fines them. So we lucky residents look at trash all over all year long. I believe Public Works is purposely trashing the city to get their overpaid union jobs back.

Behind this fence and on the other side of the house there is loads of bags left AFTER residents moved out. Who is to BLAME NOW ? ? ? This house is located diagonally across the street from the Kingston City Library - SHAMEFUL indeed ! Looking forward to a cleaner City of Kingston, NY.
Next to CRIME - CLEANING UP this city should be HIGH on the AGENDA !

Will house insurance rates go UP for neighbors nearby?? Short of volunteers ONCE again commiting to CLEANING UP the City -- WHEN & HOW will these EYESORES be remedied? Curious minds want to know ?

Fire Hazards & Health Hazards, not to mention the IMPACT is has on the Franklin St. Church and the Kingston City Library. It also MAY/MAY NOT be a concern that --The Children's Playground on VanBuren ST. borders this fiasco on Franklin St.. !. Where are the RESPONSIBLE Leaders ? We the People bailed the banks out & this is how they leave your community? How long does it take to get things done? These problems have gone on for eons. It would seem that some Petty Cash Fund could hire a contractor to FIX this & bill whomever is responsible for the Blight of our neighborhood - BANKS, OWNERS, etc. I would estimate it would take less than three (3) manhours per house to CLEAN UP these messes !

Get on your alderman's case. Let strengthen the proposal before the council on rented properties. Our housing blight comes mostly from all the absentee landlords with their section 8 tenants. They need to be forced...fines fines fines...to cleanup these properties. You and I pay the taxes that go in their pockets for their tenants rent. Go to town hall and demand action. Gallon is all for it.

Not all issues are from all the section 8 people. the landlords must tell RUPCO what kind of tenant they are and vise versa. . RUPCO has a reputation to live up to and they don't want any problems with either the tenant or the landlord.

IF neighbors are NOT OUTRAGED -- they're NOT paying attention ! These problems have gone on FAR TOO LONG -- Years . . . It High time they were fixed ! SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING, for heavens sake - DO SOMETHING !
