Great idea, Rick. I actually have given rides, as one of the walkers is actually my brother. On the other hand, pulling off onto the shoulder of a 55 mph road (where many, many, MANY people are exceeding that limit) abruptly is also dangerous to the pedestrians as well as other drivers.
In addtion, offering rides to strangers to not always in one's best interest.

I also see to many on bikes after dark riding with all dark clothes and no refelctors. How can they not realize that drivers cannot see them until we are way to close to them

Pedestrians have the right of way. If you obtained your driver's license in NYS legitimately, you would know that. If you are driving beyond the range of your head lights, SLOW DOWN! Parkways and limited access highways were built for cars only. All other roads and streets were built for humans, whether on foot, on horse, on bicycle, or in car.

People limping/staggering/pushing a wheelchair/talking/texting on their cell phone/listening to their ear buds w/their hood up/pushing a stroller across Route 9, a 45 - 55 mph road, while not paying any attention whatsoever to the cars around them, is, literally, an accident waiting to happen. (Throw in the many bicyclists, too, that don't follow the rules of the road.)
Personally, I am SUPER cautious, but many others are not. If you have ever driven on Rte 9 in Ballston Spa/Malta during rush hour ALONE, you would see what I am referring to. Not to mention late @ nite or during snow/rainstorms. EVERYONE is responsible for being cautious and most of all, using good judgment, right of way or not. If you have been driving as long as I have, you know as well as I that there are A LOT of inexperienced, distracted, texting, cell phone chatting , drunk/stoned, poor drivers out there. (Refer to the person that pulled out in front of a trooper car over the weekend in this exact area and caused someon'es death.) I don't like it either, but it's a reality.
I would suggest that if it is to be a pedestrian safe road, there need to be sidewalks, street lamps, a lower speed limit and cross walks. I don't know if that's even a possibility, but if the several motels along the road aren't really motels, but rather full-time living quarters for dozens of people, something needs to be revisited.

Yes, how many people are going to be killed there before DOT takes action? I can't think of another stretch of highway anywhere in the county that is as dangerous. My suggestion would be to start with some better lighting and a 40mph speed limit. Maybe put a traffic light with a push button next to PJ's, which would also help traffic exiting there in the summer.

State Highway 9 From Old Post Rd. To Kaydeross Ave Ballston Spa / Saratoga Springs, NY (Saratoga County)
This section of road has very little/poor lighting and has been the scene of 4 FATAL automobile and pedestrian accidents in the past 2 1/2 years. Drivers can't see pedestrians and pedestrians are not wearing safe colored clothing. Something needs to be done about the speed of the cars traveling through here and the lack of lighting that would allow drivers to see the road and their surroundings better.
