Description

The 'No turn on red' sign at this intersection is obscured by a walk signal, and is on the opposite side of the intersection. The sign is not seen by cars turning right from Grove St. onto Whitney Ave., so they believe they can turn on red when pedestrians have a walk signal. This makes the intersection dangerous for pedestrians who have the right of way.

The sign could be moved to the side of the street where Brueggers is, so drivers can see it easily.

actually, all "NO TURN ON RIGHT" signs should be hung from the traffic signal. that's what drivers are looking at. Many in New Haven are mounted on street lights on the opposite corner.

I agree that the "NO TURN" signs should be overhanging the intersection *and* posted at the intersection on the nearside, not the far side like it currently is. This is terribly dangerous intersection for pedestrians, even with walk signals.

This is not a moot point. There is a legitimate problem at this intersection and signage for vehicles is currently being blocked by the walk signal. Drivers assume they can turn on red because the sign is not visible.

I may be mistaken but isn't it illegal to turn right on red when a walk signal is in effect regardless of signage?

I'm not sure whether it's illegal or not, but it can be hard for drivers to see a walk signal. I do see people ignoring clearly posted no turn on red signals around the city, though. Maybe we need a little more enforcement.

If the problems with New Haven drivers and traffic could be solved with more signage, we would have achieved nirvana by now. The streetscape, in New Haven, is overloaded with signage to the point that it all looks like clutter or visual pollution and people just tune it all out. You can't make a city, designed for people, work for cars - hence the horror scape which is contemporary New Haven.
