Jack,
No - I would not. It is well proven that graffiti encourages other graffiti. The down town Historic part of the Hill has suffered enough of it of late at great expense to clean up. But this is a lousy example to set to those who would copycat it. If the city does it - why can't the graffiti "artist"?
The city regualrly fails to "sweat the small stuff" that is simply a matter of paying attention to something you were going to do anyway and it reduces the over all aesthetic to a marked degree.

Kristin Littlefield, Newport's Clean City coordinator, does a good job of responding to phone calls alerting her as to graffiti postings. She can be reached at 845-5613
There also this form one can use, which gets emailed to me and the police dept.....

Good on you John. Thanks.
Do you know the story on the "Filty Passageway" posting? I see someone put a padlock on it so it is collecting leaves and trash. The practical issue is that it is the route from the Mary Street parking lot to Trinity. There are a number of elderly Triinitarians (I am NOT one) who now have to walk an extra couple of blocks to get to church. from their car in the parking lot.
Best regards, Andy Lavarre, Newport, RI

For the poster jph:
Thank you for the new information.

For the City:
I hope you take Mike's suggestion and print "a laser printed sheet of paper protected by a clear plastic sleeve".
Heck, I'll print it for you for free, give me a call 339-7189 and tell me what you want to say. About a five minute job. Fifteen if you count driving down there and posting it.
Someone said Elizabeth Meyer is doing the construction? I don't know, but I DO know they aren't doing it at 10 AM on a Sunday morning when the little blue haired ladies are trying to get to church from their cars in the parking lot.
So how about some couth? Have some dude open the gates and sweep the passageway on regular time Friday afternoon (NOT on overtime) and then lock it back up on Monday, if you must. A total of about yet another fifteen minute job.
Heck, give me the padlock keys and ***I'll*** do it.
Good grief. Where's your pride?Where is your self-respect?
Shame on you.
