The signal at this intersection is interconnected with the signal at Aiken and West Sixth Street. Any changes to this location would also change the operations at the West Sixth Street intersection. I will investigate the situation and see what can be done to improve operations.

How long does a study take? The light at Lakeview Ave turning onto Aiken Street from the side coming from CVS is way too long. I realize the impact affects two intersections but the short signal on the side referred to in this is just too short. Also, the impact is even greater when you factor in the cars taking a right onto Aiken street that take up all the space when the light does finally change.

I have taken a closer look at the intersection to determine what can be done. The signal controller at this location is 25 years old and not capable of multiple phase changes and cycles. There is a high volume of traffic on both Aiken and Lakeview. If green time is added to Lakeview, it must be taken from Aiken, which would cause traffic to queue back into the VFW Highway. Giving the Lakeview Ave approach from CVS an advance left turn, while holding back the Lakeview Ave approach from Dracut, would require a green arrow on the signal head to signify a protected left turn. Any changes must be approved by the state as they paid for the signal.
While the city does not have the funds to upgrade the signal equipment to accommodate these changes, there is a measure that could provide some relief. Parking along the easterly side of Lakeview is prohibited within 70 feet of the intersection. This restriction was a condition of the city and state when the signal was installed. The signs are now missing but can be reinstalled. While this won't help left-turning traffic, this will allow through traffic to get around the vehicles waiting to turn left.

Thank you for such a thorough response. I think that anything to aleviate the conjestion would be helpful. Hopefully the long term solution for the city includes need upgrades to traffic patt3rns and signals throught the city.

Is it possible to paint arrow signs on the road. I noticed a no parking sign along the sidewalk but it is not adhered to.

Painted arrows on the pavement are not possible, as they are only done when there are two or more distinct lanes. The pavement is wide enough to squeeze by on the right if no cars are parked, but it is not wide enough to make a true second lane with striping.
I will ask the police to enforce the No Parking area.
