The Hartford Courant ran a lengthy article on August 22nd about American Indians (from India). They usually identify themselves as "American of Indian Origin". I have filled these college forms out over the years and the choices are: Caucasian; American Indian; Hispanic; Afro-American; other ( the the best of my memory). The forms gather information for Federal Reporting. Indians (India) should check off Caucasian. By checking off American Indian they are treating themselves as a minority and may be able to qualify for Government grants, etc. It raises the question that they may be getting tax dollar benefits, skewing the statistics, and may qualify for job openings that, if they had checked off Caucasian, may have not been considered. Case in point: the recent US Supreme Court decision involving the New Haven Firemen.
That is a very interesting issue that should certainly be addressed on all government documents. Thank you for writing about it. You should submit the issue to NPR for a story.
