Abandoned Autos (abandoned vehicles on the public street after 3 days)
(510) 777-8622 (report abandoned vehicles parked on the street for over 72 hours)
Often, cars that sit in the exact same place for weeks are stolen and left on the street.
It looks like it has expired registration, as well.
Thanks for clarifying. I didn't realize a stationary vehicle could be an indicator of theft. After all, we only have street cleaning twice a month and a lot of people in Oakland (including those without off-street parking) only use their cars occasionally.
Couldn't it also be a vehicle left by someone going out of town (besides the registration)? The City of Oakland website on vehicle abatement says the following:
"Note: The mere fact that a vehicle has been sitting stationary for a 72-hour period without being driven does not in and of itself authorize it to be towed under the vehicle abatement statue.
A vehicle not being driven within a 72-hour period is a baseline used in connection with a several additional visible factors including:
- Signs of abandonment, wreckage, or dismantlement
- Indications that the vehicle (or parts thereof) is inoperative
- In a condition tending to reduce the value of private property:
- Promoting blight and deterioration
- Inviting plundering
- Creating a fire hazard
- Presenting a health and safety hazard:
- Constitutes an attractive nuisance creating a hazard to the health and safety of minors
- Creates a harborage for rodents and insects and may be injurious to the health, safety, and general welfare of the public."
The City of Oakland Public Works Agency has received this issue. It is registered as service request # 471511. Please check back for status updates or contact us directly at (510) 615-5566.
I just heard the current stats on auto theft in Oakland and they are really high. Most stolen cars are eventually found dumped somewhere. They are often used for joy riding and in the commission of crimes. If a car sits on the street for weeks, it tends to raise my index of suspicion. It's a drag to go out and get a new car and then find out your stolen one has been sitting in some neighborhood for weeks. This one has an expired tag, so it's worth having the plate run.
City of Oakland Public Works Agency referred this issue to OPD ABANDONED AUTOS, service request # 471511. Please contact that agency to follow-up. For more information, please visit the "Helpful Links to Other Resource Partners" at the link below.
