I want this problem fixed, too. Driving in New Haven is a joke, people blatantly disregard the traffic laws here because they know that no one will do anything about it. The police can't really do much about it, because the higher ups in the city and the pd believe that traffic enforcement is a waste of time and resources. They don't seem to understand that enforcing traffic laws and pulling people over is a good way to get guns and drugs off the streets, or that it is a good way for the city to fill it's coffers from the money garnered from traffic tickets.
For statistics, the city should look at surrounding areas. East and West Haven may get slammed for being too willing to pull everyone and everything over, but about 1/3 of their traffic stops result in citations or arrests- getting drunk drivers off the road is just great no matter where or when it happens.
I have been saying this for years, but nothing will ever change in New Haven until we get some new people in office.

ok, how about facts. the highway loss institute found that states that have enacted cell phone bans have seen no decline in auto accident claims compared to ban free states. i'm sure you'll delete this post to as it conflicts with your pedantic ideology, but cell phones in the car are nothing to get worked up about.
the states that have enacted these bans dont/rarely enforce them and citizens rarely abide by them so any "study" is skewed. watching anything besides the road while driving is not smart or safe.
good point juan. still, using a phone and driving is a great time saver, enables millions of americans to be more efficient and connected, all while two eyes remain on the road. you don't need two hands to drive, they don't ticket one armed drivers. it's a shame hystericals have made it a crime and taddletales want to push view of what is safe on others.
Ever notice while driving that most of the really bad drivers have something in their hand? Going too slow on the highway, weaving around, sitting at green lights, running reds, its always the same self important drivers. I teach my kids to write down license plates and "tattle" on these people, its fun for the whole family.
mike, you win the cognitive dissonance award for thinking other people are self important! there are millions of safe drivers out there that talk on their phone all the time to the benefit of their family, friends and co-workers, cause no accidents, and don't do any of the things you described. weaving, stopping at red lights etc are already against traffic laws, even when they are good ideas (a red light on an empty street, for instance). i wish i felt safer having hall monitors like yourself out there looking out for me but you'll probably rather get me a traffic fine.

Thank you for the report. Did you get the time of day?
I think many people agree with e. caravan that traffic enforcement needs to be a higher priority. See http://www.newhavensafestreets.org/2008/06/updated-list-of-petition-sponsors-and.html
