Walkers need a place to walk' kids need a place for bikes/skateboards. It isn't about transportation - it is about quality & safety of life

If you want a sidewalk, move off of Walton Ferry to another neighborhood. There are NOT available funding or enough viable public space to destroy Walton Ferry for pedestrians. I guess you don't care about the people that would have to drive through the traffic for the year it would take them to add sidewalks down the street. It's simply unrealistic to demand a sidewalk when there are plenty of places you can do your walking that aren't off one of the main roads in Hendersonville.

Also, don't insult other people because you don't approve of their idea, that's just childish.

What!?! I live in the Windstar Bay subdivision at the end of Walton Ferry and drive down that road each and every day! I cant believe that anyone would oppose having a sidewalk. The existing sidewalk that runs from the Chesapeake subdivision to Walton Ferry Elementary is undoubtedly a beautiful, funtional addition to our community, allowing children a safe route to school and the rest of us a nice area to get some exercise! Every time I see the middle school children on the edge of the street, trying to walk to and from school, I cringe! The months of dealing with traffic and construction is a small price to pay for the safety of our children and pedistrians!

The real problem is the jackasses that use the roads as their own personal race track. If people were more aware, I would have no fear about riding the Walton Ferry/Sanders Ferry loop. I used to about 6 years ago, then something strange happened. Almost every time I would go out, even riding tightly against the shoulder, people would zoom past and very close, even though there was no need for them to be that close.

I have lived down the Walton Ferry/Sanders Ferry penninsula since 1972. The biggest issue over the years is the fact that there are more residents than these roads can support. However, this is a residential area with neighborhoods and schools. With that come children and people who want to enjoy their neighborhoods. Telling them they need to go elsewhere for a walk is selfish and unrealistic. A sidewalk on at least one side of the road would help this situation greatly. The inconvenience for a period of time would be well worth it. Those who feel that way are probably the same ones who ride your bumper flashing lights and honking when you are driving the speed limit. And just try getting turned onto Walton Ferry or Sanders Ferry from one of the side streets during the morning or evening. Maybe some of those drivers who are more concerned with the inconvenience of a neighborhood should be the ones who move. And here's thought if you are in such a hurry to get somewhere that you can't abide those driving the speed limit, leave earlier and allow yourself more time.

No one is going to move at your suggestion, and this issue has nothing to really do with drivers. It's a lack of available land for the city of Hendersonville to excavate, smooth, and shape the land to add more sidewalks. I don't know if you've noticed but there just isn't the space available on public land for such a task.

The other issue is that while there are many children, they should definitely not be hiking up and down Walton or Sanders Ferry, as there are numerous side streets that run parallel with these roads. It should be an easy remedy to teach your children that the most direct route is not always the safest.

If you've lived there since 1972, you're already aware of the traffic issue, and I've yet to see or experience anyone "flashing lights and honking when you are driving the speed limit." It's not that I'm saying it didn't happen, but it's not so common as you're alluding. I drive these roads several times a week, as it's the only ingress to the peninsula, so it's not as though I'm out of touch. If someone is tailing you when you're driving at the limit, feel free to ease off the accelerator pedal until they get the hint that you're not going to zoom zoom.

There are plenty of areas that have plenty of room for a sidewalk. The city maintains a right of way into all land along all streets. Any other opinion is rubbish. There should be money for this. Any other opinion is rubbish also, since.....Example: we REALLY need all that "beautification" on Gallatin Road, dont we? No. The mayor and his minions are too busy "beautifying" the parts of the city that attract or cater to Halo and business ventures that line their pockets. After all, his part of Walton Ferry has sidewalks.

I will oppose this if it comes up during any discussion. That money and time could and should be better spent elsewhere.

Safe Routes to School Program Grant

The City of Hendersonville has applied to Tennessee Department of Transportation for a grant in the amount of $249,905 to construct 0.7 mile of sidewalk along the west side of Walton Ferry Road from Morris Drive to Hawkins Middle School. This will be an extension of the existing sidewalk / trail which runs from Walton Ferry Elementary School past Windstar Bay and Chesapeake Harbor to Morris Drive. A map of the project may be viewed here.

This grant program is called the Safe Routes to School Program and is designed to increase opportunities for children to walk and bike to school. The exercise improves the health of our children while the reduced car traffic reduces congestion and pollution. More importantly, this section of Walton Ferry is very dangerous for children to walk on as there is no shoulder. The sidewalk will eliminate this safety hazard.

This is a project the City could not fund on its own. The grant provides 100% funding and grant awards will be announced in approximately 6 months.

It's NOT going to get fixed to your satisfaction. Deal with it and move on. I like how you feel you HAVE to walk on Walton Ferry, a KNOWN problem for pedestrian traffic.

The city of Hendersonville has provided ample park and greenway paths for walkers out for exercise, and there is not going to be a sidewalk all the way down Walton Ferry anytime in the near future. There is not enough demand for foot traffic to justify the expenditure.

4, almost 5 year old post and all the people that downed it and/or that gave negative comments. But look at what's happening now, we are getting MUCH needed sidewalks on Walton Ferry. It's going very slowly, but it is happening!! :-)

Thanks to all the people who have commented about sidewalks. AND, thanks to the public officials who have made the sidewalks happen. How nice to see people enjoying the safer, easier walk. Leaving this issue open for a brief time will provide space for comments.
