The traffic circle at 16th street and 410/29/Eastern is one of the worst in the entire city, with poorly timed lights, too many access points, and frequent accidents. Worse than that is horrible pedestrian access without many crosswalks painted in. I understand that there is a long-term plan to re-design the traffic circle and make improvements. That said, it seems to me that in the interest in improving pedestrian safety (and possibly saving lives), there are some short term fixes that could significantly improve the circle and be implemented in a very short time. These are:
Paint crosswalks and erect pedestrian signs where pedestrians walk.
Trim back thick (and sight blocking) shrubbery on 16th street that limits visibility for motorists and pedestrians.
Add additional crosswalk signals where possible.
With these short-term (and minimal cost) fixes, the intersection could immediately be made a lot safer for pedestrians and motorists alike and quite possibly save some lives.
