This entire intersection complex (Hayes, Canal, and 19 Mile) needs some SERIOUS re-engineering. Add to the mess are northbound Hayes vehicles waiting to left turn into Tim Horton's just before 19 Mile causing left lane backups.

A regular traffic light at northbound Hayes and Canal with regular left turn lane from southbound Hayes to eastbound Canal with simultaneous right turn arrow for westbound Canal to northbound Hayes would work best. There would be no need for a turnaround for southbound Hayes.

Think simple!!

Simple? How do you intend to put all the vehicles turning from NB Hayes to WB 19 mile and all the vehicles turning from SB Hayes to EB Canal and all the vehicles turning from NB Hayes to Tim Hortons and Valvoline into ONE left turn lane?

Get rid of the concrete island and make it a left turn only lane.

I agree with the idea of getting rid of part of the concrete barrier perhaps 25 feet short of Tim Horton's drive way, just lengthen that lane a bit more. It would eliminate that left turn back up a bit. By the way, in heavy traffic there is another way to get into Tim Hortons, it's off of 19 mile west of the Oil change place a small drive way takes you to the back of Tim Horton's.
I use that way out when I am going out onto East bound 19 mile, to avoid trying to turn left onto Hayes from Tim Horton's, so much safer.

I agree with you that they need to get rid of the concrete barrier and put up a traffic signal. It would not only help the traffic congestion on Hayes, but it will help those trying to turn off of Canal. There’s always a backup on Canal in the afternoon, starting around 3:30 pm.

brown, well to tell you the truth, the east side of Hayes is Clinton Twp, however the west side of Hayes IS Sterling Heights. So, there you go! Maybe the powers that be and the road commission would consider this as a possible???

You cannot do a roundabout there. There is too much traffic. The idea of a stop light is good but I would suggest that the city times them with the light at the BP and at 19 mile since they are all so close.

We have highly paid traffic engineers at state, county, and local levels who should fix this fouled up complex of intersections. Maybe one of the universities could have their students compete in a contest!!! The winner gets a free meal at Tim Hortons, an oil change at Valvoline, free tank of gas at either gas station and a gift certificate for Dollar General.

It's been over a year and NOTHING appears to have been done. Come on State of Michigan, County of Macomb, City of Sterling Heights, and Charter Township of Clinton and find a solution and then implement it!!

If you think about it, the turnarounds/highways are merely roundabouts--elongated with traffic lights!
