Description
New stickers on recycling bins are interesting. I note that Pizza Boxes are listed in what's IN, yet all I read about single stream recycling on line is that pizza boxes SHOULD NOT be recyclied as they are often greasy. Please clarify.
Also, I'm wondering what SPIRAL WOUND CONTAINERS are. Please clarify.
FOOD AND BEVERAGE CARTONS: does this mean that juice boxes and soup boxes and others which are lined are recyclable, yet ICE CREAM containers are not ? My ice cream comes in plastic containers with lids that according to the new guidelines CAN be recycled!
PLASTIC BOTTLES WITH CAPS attached are recyclable, but the loose bottle caps are NOT.
I find this new set of guidelines incomplete and confusing. Also, a sticker on the bins is TOO LATE to notice: I separate my items INSIDE my house, not at the recycle bin. I bet others do the same thing.
This whole policy and communication effort needs to be reviewed, in my opinion.

Thanks for asking. The emphasis is on "clean, rinsed, emptied and opened" so if the pizza box has "grease"- it's out. Since new regulations (which are not radically different if the items are "clean and emptied" as emphasized) are statewide, we are attempting to do a variety of things to reach out to our residents. If you take a look at dpw's recycling page on city website, you'll also see a link to a flyer which matches the recycling stickers. If you need to sort out "what's in and what's out" inside your residence, you can download the flyer or give us a call at dpw: 203-946-7700 and we will mail you a copy.
Another handy reference is on the same page of our website. Just go to the end of the Recycle Recycling piece and there is a link to the State tool where you can input any item to find out if it is indeed recyclable.
Here is the link to Recycling Page. Hope this helps. Thanks!
