Description

To whom it may concern, City of Oakland,

I have lived at my current address for 7 years. Recently, my neighbors and I, in the Bushrod/Dover area, from 54th to Alcatraz Ave, have been noticing worsening traffic and safety issues on Shattuck Avenue. It can be very difficult for me to safely pull my car out my driveway, due to parked cars, limited visibility, and speeding mororists. Neighbors report difficulty making left hand turns from 60th to 63rd onto northbound Shattuck, due to the same issues. I have witnessed many accidents on our street, and have even been involved in one myself several years ago, when a speeding motorist struck my vehicle as I tried to pull out into the northbound lane. There are many new young families moving into our neighborhood, many second or third generation with young children, and elders/disabled folks in our community who should not have to run in fear to cross the street! I firmly believe that pedestrian signals, spaced at 56th and Shattuck (Uptown Market/bus stop), 59th bus stop, and 61st (Sankofa School) would help to decrease driver speeds and increase pedestrian safety for our whole community.
Speed bumps could be another option to slow down motorists. Shattuck is a neighborhood street, not an expressway!

Thank you very much for your time and attention.

Sincerely,
Denise Doyle
