Description

On July 27, 2018, at around 11:45 am, our bicycle group rode past Navy Yard property on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail in a southeast direction. A member of our group fell. The tires on her bicycle got caught in the groove between two squares. She fell and broke her collarbone.

The surface on the Riverwalk consists of squares, three rows wide, with some kind of grouting between the squares. The grouting is cracked and worn away, which makes it all too easy for a bicycle’s tires to get caught in the groove between squares. In addition, the squares in the middle row are uneven. In some places, it looks like the squares dip around 2 inches before they meet up with another square. It is a tripping or biking disaster waiting to happen.
