Descrição

First of all, thank you for widening Alexander Ave to make the road safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

I was riding westbound through the construction site this afternoon, after work had ceased for the day, so there were no flagmen to direct traffic. Upon approaching the site (east of the Danes Dr intersection) I noticed a row of soft hit posts on the shoulder, these looked to be placed to keep cyclists from passing stopped cars on the right, so I queued up behind the cars to the left of the posts. After clearing the intersection, the width and placement of the posts seemed to indicate that I should ride to the right of them. Even though the space was quite narrow I did that for a little while until my 'lane' shrunk even more due to overgrown vegetation, poor pavement condition and road debris. Not wanting to be squeezed out, I quickly cut back in to the main travel lane a difficult maneuver due to the close post spacing. Shortly thereafter, cars began passing me at a high rate of speed and the 'lane' to the right of the post began to widen again leaving me to wonder if I should be back on the other side. Not wanting to maneuver between posts again, I chose to maintain my position in the main lane until I cleared the construction zone.

My request are as follows:
1. Please install signs or other treatments that indicate the correct path of travel for cyclists and pedestrians.
2.If there is to be a separate 'bike lane' please clear it of obstacles including trimming the vegetation that is infringing upon it and sweeping gravel and other debris from the road regularly.
3. If there is to be a bike lane, please consider moving the soft hit posts to the inside of the white line (they are currently just outside of it) to provide cyclists safe room to operate. I believe 4 feet is the standard width, the lane I was using seemed to be about 2 - 3 feet. A narrower car lane will have the added bonus of slowing down traffic through the site, reducing risks to personnel working there.

Thank you!

-- Dan
