A very simple solution to some of the congestion at rt8 southbound exit 15. There are three lanes at the end of the ramp, 1 left 1 straight and 1 right. The center straight lane can be made a right turn also, providing 2 turning lanes. Many drivers get in the center straight lane and turn right anyway, while the drivers following the law are waiting in the right lane. I don't know why this was never done????

Agreed - there is another issue about this where the person is complaining about people turning right from the center lane saying "that it is clearly marked" as a straight only lane, which is not accurate. The only indication is a worn out pavement marking, which would not even be visible with snow on the ground.
The traffic coming out of Home Depot and the train station now has a protected left turn period when the light turns green that didn't always exist - which could have been the original reason. It makes a huge deal of sense (since there is no longer conflicting traffic) to make the intersection symmetrical to the one on the other side with two lanes turning right.
One issue is that when the light turns green, it needs to be synced so that the intersection isn't still clogged with left turners, otherwise the "right turn from center lane" people will have nowhere to go.

I agree with you both. The design of this (already re-designed) exit ramp is poor at best. You do not need a lane dedicated to customers of home depot and the train station when 75% of traffic flowing off the ramp is headed towards New Haven on 34 and already has to make an awkward sharp right turn onto 34 only to be stopped often by another signal within 30 feel at the 8 entrance ramps.
Someone was not thinking at all.
However, Derby needs to formally make a request of the DOT for any of this to be studied or changed. Sadly, we have waited nearly two decades for the State to "study" the urgent needs to an Northbound 8 entrance ramp on Pershing Drive near Shoprite or a southbound exit ramp to Pershing.
Instead, traffic is still dangerously traveling through residential Atwater Street to Division (which is backed up horribly) to reach this commercial district. It's insane.
