I agree that there is a traffic safety issue due to missing signage. I recall that there used to be a "NO TURN ON RED LIGHT" posted there. In any case, the lack of proper signage could cost someone their life.

There is a sign which the second and third car in line can see. Of course, these cars can't turn until the first car has turned right. Since the first car does not have a sign, it may turn.

There was a work order created on this ticket in late March or early April. I suspect that the sign which is visible from the second car position was replaced. I verified that sign was visible on May 2. There is still not a sign visible from the first position in line. Of course, that is the only position which can turn right.

City of Oakland Public Works Department addressed this issue on 08/18/2014, service request # 452081.

Public Works states that it is not appropriate to have a sign there.

When I called the number, I left a message. Therefore, I am reopening the ticket until I receive a clear explanation of the reason for the refusal to place a sign.

Traffic Engineering has given me many problems in the past. I got three "RIGHT TURN ON GREEN ARROW ONLY" signs installed at E. 12th Street and Fruitvale Avenue because of chronic illegal turns. I went through Area 2 commander, Captain Tull, and Area 3 commander, Captain Orozco. I requested that the OPD inspect the problem for traffic safety issues and verify it. After they determined it was a traffic safety issue, Captain Orozco submitted the request to Public Works and it was implemented by Traffic Engineering. If I had gone directly to Traffic Engineering, the signs would NEVER been put up. Since police officers have expert knowledge of traffic safety and are charged with enforcing the California Vehicle Code, they have the clout to get it done.
