Dear Dr. Gridlock:
Jones Mill Rd. [in Chevy Chase] going north from Jones Bridge Rd. is an accident waiting to happen.
The road is narrow, with one lane each way, and there is no sidewalk or shoulder. There's also a nasty curve just north of the Jones Bridge Rd. intersection. Pedestrians and cyclists who try to negotiate this stretch of road risk becoming roadkill. Meanwhile, traffic zips by at 40+ mph; coming up on the curve, drivers cannot see the road ahead nor anything on it.
During the afternoon rush hour, I have see folks on foot and bike [including children] try to dash up this stretch before getting hit. Drivers coming around the curve can't see them and can't swerve to avoid them if there are cars in the oncoming lane.
How about widening the road slightly to put in a walker/biker lane? Or installing speed bumps? Who's in charge?!

Dear Ms. Wyman,
County DOT has informed me that there is a project scheduled for FY12 in Facility Planning for bikeways along Jones Mill between Stoneybrook Rd and MD410. They can include the sidewalk evaluation in that study. Please be aware that it can take years between the facility planning process and actual construction.
In the meantime, DOT will explore whether immediate interim measures to address safety can be taken under the Sidewalks Program.

OK, that's good news. A bikeway that walkers could also use would solve the problem--so no need for sidewalks, in that case. HOWEVER, until this happens can't they just put in a few speed bumps? That's a simple, relatively cheap solution and it could save lives.
