Al. W. - I know that .. and you know that .. now those in the city (who should know about it) know about it. The signs were there at one time. They need to be replaced. DOT has a published map that all drivers are aware of. Why these trucks drive up and down Broadway and Washington with impunity can only be answered by our PS Commissioner. They are beaking the law no less than someone who ignores crosswalks, talks on a cell phone, and drives unbuckled. Does it matter?

I was a part-time truck driver until recently and if I did not live here I wouldn't know about downtown. I personally did not have a GPS unit but I only drove locally. There are commercial GPS units out there but I do not know if they have the preferred route programmed. Never saw the DOT map you refer to and I have been driving for 25 years. Not likely there could be legitimate enforcement without the signs. I would certainly fight any citation to that effect.

NYSDOT has routes designated for SDV (53) vehicles - these are generally not delivery vehicles, with the exception of those that service the racecourse. Too many trucks are travelling from x14 to x15 via Broadway (and vice versa) and are off the designated truck routes as posted on 50 and 9. Large delivery tractors which have business within the city are another matter. Its the ones that are consistantly "off route" that create the problems.I agree, the signs should be employed to direct the through traffic onto designated roadways.

Bring these issues up at City Hall and maybe some things will get fixed.

We have been fighting this fight on Congress Ave. for more than 30 years, asking for 5 Ton Limit signs to be posted BEFORE the trucks turn onto W. Fenlon St. and cross Rt. 50 to Congress Ave. Our underground pipes have had to be replaced several times because of the truck traffic, and, homeowners were responsible for it. In 1988 I had to pay $1200 to get a new pipe from the middle of the road to my house because I sprung a geyser in my front yard from the pipe bursting under the road.. Good luck, and I have contacted City Hall several times..

53 foot long trailers have designated routes around the city but they are not enforced. Maybe we need a "free cafe latte" contest at Starbucks by those in the windows watching all the trucks making their turn onto the sidewalk and onto an undesignated roadway? Cars are forever made to back up in traffic to accomodate these rigs and that can't be good. The "officially sanctioned" truck routes need to be revisited with new signage replacing those that have disappeared over time. If large trucks have business within the city, they unfortunately must travel on the roads, but an ocassional check of manifests would stop many from taking a shortcut. Public Safety is the route you want to go ..again.

The long trucks hopping the curb at Starbucks and forcing cars to back up down Washington is an hourly occurance. The City needs to revisit their "truck routes" replacing signs that have disappeared over time. Through trucking can be discouraged by the occassional inspections of manifests and the posting of load limits on roadways. Yes Mary, as staterd, this can be done .. let your PS officials know that you support their diligence to this matter.

When I moved up here over 20 years ago this was an issue even back then. There used to be these enormous trucks filled with logs trying to navigate their way through town and I could never figure out where the sawmill was in the city.

The laws to mitigate this issue are on the books. Many of these trucks have legitimate business to conduct in town but it seems impossible that they all do.

Trucks with legitamite business in town will have manifests. Oversized trucks that do not and are prevented by DOT from some roads need to cited every once in a while to spread the message that our enforcers are out there. The only legitamate business a tandem logging truck has for driving down Washington Street from 29 instead of staying on its designmated route to 50 N is a lack of signage and enforcement. These heavy trucks are destroying our streets andf our foundations.

Till the city or ps decides that it can make a difference nothing will change. Washington street and broadway are not sanctioned dot sdv routes.

Nobody cares, the long trucks still back up traffic on Broadway and Washington and rumble down the street immune to enforcement even during an election year! That's why we pay our taxes and next year's projected increase. Now why is this issue incorrectable?

Dot publishes routes for 53 foot long trailers. Washington and broadway are not on it.

Everyday every hour these long trucks cause cars to back up on Washington so they can turn off Broadway. They turn south on Broadway and North hopping the curbs. From Starbuck's this is the usual view. So where in the world is the Traffic guy from city hall? Why are these trucks permitted to take short cuts? If anyone of these employees lived on this street, they would decide to look into the legitimacy of these extra long trucks.

There is currently a detour in place for westbound Route 29 due to construction on Washington St. Maybe when that is done the detour signs can just be changed to read TRUCK ROUTE. This will help with trucks turning right from Broadway to Washington. There is no posted 'Truck Route' now so enforcement would be questionable.
