I agree that something should be done, and that synchronized left turn signals would probably be more intelligent and efficient. BUT, the middle lanes would have to marked as left turn only lanes [or some other notification provided] so that a motorist in the middle lane who doesn't want to turn left doesn't hold everyone behind him up. I have witnessed the very situation described in the complaint but also wish to note that the driver attempted to "run the yellow" and the two lead eastward drivers, exasperated by the heat no doubt, refused to give way to the turner's disregard for the law. This left the turner's car partially blocking the box [intersection] resulting in a dangerous situation and much honking of horns, etc. Which proves, I suppose, that the best laid plans of mice and men are of absolutely no use if we ignore them. If we could count on folks to obey the law, and not put themselves above it, even imperfect rules and systems might perform well.
