Description

In the past month I have noticed that two historical markers (made of metal)have been removed (I guess - stolen). The first one commemorated a speech given by Abraham Lincoln on the corner of State Street and Court Street about workers rights. The other plaque was on the New Haven Green on the corner of Chapel and College and it commemorated the French immigrant who invented the bicycle.
Who's stealing all the signs? How much money can they get for a metal sign? Who is the fence for such goods? Don't legitament smelters report stolen property to the police?

Should this issue be split off into two different issues located at the former spot of those two plaques? Seems like they are two separate issues.

Anything metal and removable will be stolen and brought to a metal recycler, cash paid no questions asked. Historical markers, metal grave markers, copper pipes from forclosed homes. The legislature, state and city police need to recognize this problem and actively prosecute those involved, the thieves who stealing the metal and the recyclers who pay for it.

Has the Abraham Lincoln plaque been replaced? I believe that the bicycle plaque on the New Haven Green was re-done using stone.

The Lincoln plaque has not been replaced, nor has the other plaque on the other side of the same building that commemorates the first telephone exchange in 1878. I've been thinking maybe we can do something creative to replace some of the missing plaques around town, maybe with QR codes or something.

I like the idea of QR codes. I'd be happy to work on creating content and paying for the codes, if someone were willing to work with property owners to help secure locations. This would be a good topic for discussion with the NHPT too.
