Yes, there is a real need for more traffic and speed control on Blanding ave. Cars literally race from Broadway to Park street, and it is very dangerous to try and cross, as drivers seldom slow down or stop for pedestrians. I have also seen many people trip and fall because of the unused train tracks. This is an an area of urban renewal; more and more people are visiting this neighborhood, and the city of Alameda needs to make it safer for the people and businesses in this area.

thanks for bringing attention to this safety issue --- i think that having a stop sign AND a cross walk on blanding at everett would be really helpful. cars rarely stop for pedestrians at that intersection and i've witnessed several near accidents, especially when there is poor visibility from the commercial trucks that park along blanding. i also agree about the unused train tracks being a hazard and think something should be done about these, they are also a hazard for people on bicycles and tires getting caught...

There are no red zones at the stop signs. Trucks are regularly parked like this.

A phone call to the City Public Works department (is there any faint red stripes on the corners?) and a letter to the Mayor and City Council might help the situation. Let's put together a safety petition and distribute it in the neighborhood.

Although not a safety issue, this was my experience with the City and the red stripe situation. The curb in front of my office building had a red stripe painted on it and it has faded over the years. We frequently get blocked in by vehicles parking behind the authorized parking space. In contacting the City, I was advised that it would cost $229.00 to have it painted and that it would be at least a 30 day wait. I sent the money.

I am willing to help anyway I can on this project.

Thank you for your comments and concerns regarding "speeding" in the 2400 and 2500 blocks of Blanding Ave. I apologize for not responding to this post earlier, but I have just learned of this website and see there are some issues which need to be addressed.

As the supervisor of the Alameda Police Department's Traffic Division, I take all concerns of speeding vehicles in any neighborhood (residential and/or commercial) seriously. In response to "speeding" on this street, I have placed our radar speed trailer on Blanding Ave, have had multiple officers running radar on this particular stretch of the roadway and have asked our patrol officers working in the Patrol Division to increase their enforcement efforts in this area.

The posted speed limit is 25 mph. The reports back from the officers running radar are that the majority of the vehicles traveling in this area are driving between 25 mph and 34 mph. Although this is their findings, I am sure there is the occassional speeder who excedes 35 mph.

I understand there are additional concerns in this area in regards to crosswalks and oversized vehicles parked near corners of intersecting streets. I have been in communication with the Public Works Department and they are evaluating the area.

The Alalmeda Police Department offers a Neighborhood Speed Watch program which is operated by the citizens in the neighborhood with the assistance of our Volunteers in Policing. Please call me for details of this program.
