Cars coming over Eastern Ramp onto Richmond street go flying down the road at many KM/h past the speed limit making this road almost impossible to cross. It needs street lights to stop the traffic yesterday before someone gets killed.
They have police there doing radar 4-5 days a week.
if you put stop lights at power/richmond, then the already massive backlog of traffic going up the ramp during rush hour (due to the parliament lights) will be 10x worse.
Police "doing radar 4-5 days a week" backs up my need for crossing lights because even the cops know that the drivers are going way over the speed limit. As for Dave, see my first sentence; besides from your non-solution being at best a dumb comment by not solving the problem, the speed of the drivers will still be a problem. This area is changing fast and it has to meet the needs of its community first and foremost. However using your logic, maybe the cars should not be allowed to exit onto Richmond but should be diverted instead onto eastern.
Im saying simply, lights at power/richmond will not work.
I work on power st and can see the intersection. Its very busy during rush hour because of the traffic coming off the DVP.
During rush hour the traffic actually backs up all the way back to the DVP..so if lights were put in, then it would make things even worse.
Like I said, simply walk to the cross walk/lights at Parliament. Maybe 100 metres...just ahead of the shell station.
No issue...
Dave, it is good to have this conversation. But I continue to disagree with your logic. Here is why:
your 1st comment: "If traffic lights will not work, traffic is already backed up to the DVP, and the lights (at which you expect all area residents to cross) are only 100 metres away (and still backed up)" -- your logic, then you will have to agree with me that the off ramp should be moved to Eastern instead because obviously the Richmond Street ramp was poorly designed for this traffic and doesn't accommodate the flow from the DVP. This issue only gets compounded by a growing Corktown community that use Power Street as way of getting to their local church, store, dog park, etc.
your 2nd comment: Of course it is a cash thing but it is also solidifies the reason that the cars should be moving much slower for safety reasons. This ramp was not designed for this type of traffic going through the middle of a community. It is too much. Since the drivers as you put it "will speed anyway" it is time to study this problem and ultimately have it fixed. We do not need a death before action comes to this issue.
I respect people's opinions but I am afraid that sooner rather than later there is going to be a fatality in the neighbourhood because people (city councilor, Pam McConnell) just ignored this issue. If you work near this intersection then you will agree that there are a lot more people in the area (especially dog walker in this instance) and I don't want to see anyone hurt (or their animals) just because drivers think that they are still on the DVP.
would love to see this area safer. I don't know what would work, but doing nothing as dave suggests isn't smart. i don't want to be killed just because cars fly down the ramp way too fast, i don't want my kids to be injured, nor our family dog. the only reason i would have of placing drivers in my sights is that they are always speeding and this has to change. from dave's description it doesn't sound like the ramp is well designed, especially if traffic is always backed up; there is nothing wrong with changing this ramp because drivers will always speed. it is not a right to have this ramp but a privilege that is being abused. safety first, drivers with lead feet second.
But why is it so difficult to walk to the shell station and cross at the lights and backtrack to the park??
It seems the only options you two have is to penalize the many drivers for the actions of a few speeders?
How about simply putting in a proper crosswalk? not a full light system. Just a push button cross walk. Easily seen from the top of the Richmond ramp. Car would have plenty of time to stop and it would not be as horrific as a traffic light.
Just one correction, it is not "j-walking", it is a full and proper intersection Dave. It is just you have to be the Flash to cross it. Even the car drivers crossing Richmond have to pretend they are drag racing across. And unfortunately there are not just a few speeders but the majority of the drivers who are well over the speed limit. (unless the cops are there) x-walks may work however.
Dave, you keep saying "J walking", but you are incorrect, it is an intersection that people can legally walk though. (or run like Flash) Hell, even the cars trying to get across have to perform like drag racers. BTW, there are not just a few speeders... come on.But cross-walk may work too.
maybe so, but it certainly is no place to cross unless you are paying attention or fairly quick.
i just thing this is a waste of time and money to pursue.
walk 50 metres to parliament and walk back...most of us need the extra walk anyway.
my nephew goes to school in the area, they dont cross on power. they cross at parliament. they seem to get it...why cant you people?
Just because you are legally able to cross at an intersection does not, as dave says, make it a good idea. You really cannot have traffic lights at every intersection and the number of pedestrians in that area is really quite small and it hardly seems too much to ask for people to walk to the signalised crossing at Parliament.

this is not a solution.

Suggestion? Go to parliament, USE THE LIGHTS AND CROSSWALK (instead of J walking at power st)
then back track on adelade...
Problem solved

Police doing radar is a cash thing, its an easy spot to collect revenue.
They aren't going to stop doing radar and lights wont stop people from speeding. It will just create more traffic for the drivers.

Agreed discussion is good, however I strongly disagree.
The ramp was designed for cars. Just because there are more pedestrians in the area is no reason to stop or change the flow of traffic.
You are J walking. So simply move up to the lights at parliament and back track.
Or get the city to remove the richmond ramp and force people to stay left and take eastern. Which really is the only solution for the pedestrians...
A stop light just wont work, as it will create way too much vehicle traffic.
I think its the mentality that too many Torontonians have, that we should keep putting the drivers in our sights...that is what irks me.
But fair enough, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just don't share that view.
