What the intersection needs is a "Roundabout". They save time and gasoline for everyone.

For their own personal safety, and to protect other motorists and pedestrians, those that complain about roundabouts may want to consider getting into the backseat and let a more competent driver take you to Bingo!

Actually, I see they started staking out the roundabout just a few days ago. The stakes go all the way down Romeo Plank towards Cass. I'm excited about the fix, but I hope they wait until school lets out in June, just to avoid major traffic hassles with the buses.

As pointed out, it's already in the works for the roundabout. You won't think the 4 way stop is so bad once you figure out how to get around when they close off the intersection for 2 months. Plus if you use the existing ones on Cass and Romeo Plank, most people treat them like a 4 way stop anyway. More accidents from people running into the back of others when they stop for no reason, than with a stop sigh.

I live right by Romeo Plank and Canal. There are a lot of walkers and bikers in the area. I take my two dogs for walks.
I can't image how were suppose to walk safely thru this intersection when it becomes a roundabout. People don't know how to use the roundabouts. .... A simple light would be so much easier and safer. But were talking Clinton Township...put those new lights at the corner of Garfield and Canal and see accidents there all the time now. And the new section of Cass!!....well, there is no sidewalks so I see people walking and biking in the street. How safe is that????

The Road Commission of Macomb County has the resurfacing of Romeo Plank from Canal to Cass and the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Romeo Plank and Canal. This project has been planned for years with 80% of the cost coming from federal funds that were applied for years ago, so this roundabout has been planned for years. We had the project on schedule for last year, but delays in right of way property purchasing and local funding resources postponed the project. We are scheduled to start the project later this summer.

Roundabouts are pedestrian friendly and include American Disability Association (ADA) ramps and islands (referred to as pedestrian refuge areas) so that walkers only have to cross one direction of traffic at a time.

Roundabouts are proven to be safer, more environmentally friendly, and more economical to maintain. We understand that motorists may take some time to get used to them, but the benefits are undeniable.

Thank goodness a roundabout is being put in...this has been needed for 20 years.

Road Commission - what's the timeframe for the project to be completed? I've also heard that Romeo Plank btwn Cass and Canal is going to be completely shut down (no through traffic) for 39 days sometime... is this true and when can we expect that, if you know?

ESTIMATED COMPLETION DATE: November 15, 2010
DESCRIPTION: Road rehabilitation from Canal to Cass and roundabout construction at Romeo Plank and Canal. Thru traffic will be maintained in each direction, subject to delays. Intersection of Canal Road and Romeo Plank will be closed for 30 days and a detour will be posted (closure date to be determined).

Okay, does anyone know what is going on with this project NOW? The newspaper reported it to be open on November 15th, the detour signs are gone, yet the intersection's still closed? Is there a block party going on that I don't know about?

From what I am hearing, it should be opening this Friday (November 19th).

I hope that the road commission has planned for this properly. I live near there, and as far as I can see, a family of 4 on bikes are not going to make it thru this intersection. There is no room for them to stop for traffic in the center walkway while waiting for traffic. And the thought that traffic is going to stop for pedestrians doesn't work for me. I've tried the round a bout near the high school. Cars don't stop for walkers or bikers. Also where's the sidewalk connection for the south/west corner. Hope they've put one in in the last couple of days......Will this roundabout be properly salted and shoveled for walkers trying to get to the library?/ park/ civic center

Now that the roundabout is at this intersection (Canal & Romeo Plank), some people are not yielding and continuing through when they should be stopping for the proper flow of traffic. I though it was bad when the 4 way stop was in place. It's amazing how many people are unaware of the proper way to go through this intersection!!!
